Last time, some scientists and engineers tried to make a theme park filled with dinosaurs. It didn’t go so well. Now, the park is gone. The island belongs to the dinosaurs. But our heroes return. Welcome… to The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Oh, what’s this? The scientists built another park and it went just as well? And they’re going back again? Gotcha. Ahem. Welcome… to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Since 2015’s Jurassic World took the concept of a dino-park from Jurassic Park and make it bigger and deadlier, it appears that it only makes sense for the sequel to do the same with the original’s equal involving dinosaurs reclaiming the island. Yesterday, Universal released a new trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Tell me that isn’t just a beefed up version of The Lost World.
Returning to an island overtaken by dinosaurs? Check. Bringing said dinosaurs back to the mainland? Check. Jeff Goldblum back as well? Check (not that that’s ever a bad thing)! But it does look like the new film may have some changes. In The Lost World, chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (aforementioned Goldblum) returned to the island just to document the dinosaurs in a natural habitat. This time, reboot heroes Owen Grady and Claire Dearing (Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard) return to save the dinosaurs from a second extinction. The volcano on the island is set to erupt. Why did they build a theme park on an island with an active volcano? Who knows. But the stakes seem higher. Likewise, the corporate entity this time around seems intent to create new dinosaurs on the mainland rather than just bring one back.
There are a few interesting references and moments in the trailer. I for one found the brief clip of the Mosasaurus hiding under the wave of surfers to be chilling. We’ll see how similar Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be to The Lost World when it roars into theaters on June, 22nd.
