Amazon is looking to hit it out of the park to try and catch up with Netflix and Hulu on the field of original series. They’re going to be getting a little help from a 1992 classic – the baseball comedy A League of Their Own.
The show will be co-written and executive produced by Mozart in the Jungle‘s Will Graham and Broad City‘s Abbi Jacobson. The half hour comedy series will not feature either of the two main characters from the film, Dottie and Kit. And no, Tom Hanks is probably not going to be coming back either. It will be produced by Sony Pictures Television Studios.
Here’s the official synopsis, as re-printed in The Hollywood Reporter:
“A League of Their Own is a half-hour comedy infusing the warmth, humor and DNA of the classic film, while taking a contemporary spin on the stories of the women surrounding the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The show will begin with the formation of the league in 1943 and follows the Rockford Peaches, season to season as they struggle to keep the team alive through close games, injuries, late night bar crawls, sexual awakenings, not crying and road trips across a rapidly changing United States. The series dives deeper into the issues facing the country while following a ragtag team of women figuring themselves out while fighting to realize their dreams of playing professional baseball.”
Believe it or not, this will actually be the second show based on the film. Immediately after the film’s success, CBS tried their hand at a scripted show in 1993. However the show only ran for 6 episodes, so hopefully the Amazon one will have a little more success. You can watch the pilot from the first show here.
There is no information on who will direct or star in the series, nor when we can expect these ladies to take to the field.
