This article is not going to be a fully fleshed out review on the anime Citrus, but instead will discuss my thoughts on the anime so far and whether I recommend watching it or not. At the end of the 2018 winter season of anime, I may do a full review covering every aspect of the anime.
Until then, let’s begin!
The Story:
Yuzu, a high school gyaru who hasn’t experienced her first love yet, transfers to an all-girls school after her mother remarries. She’s beyond upset that she can’t land a boyfriend at her new school. Then, on her first day, she meets the beautiful black-haired student council president Mei in the worst way possible. What’s more, she later finds out that Mei is her new step-sister, and they’ll be living under the same roof! And so the love affair between two polar opposite high school girls who find themselves drawn to one another begins! (Source: Crunchyroll)
My Thoughts:
So let’s get this out of the way. Yes, this is a yuri anime about two step-sisters who are having a love affair where things get pretty spicy. Only to my surprise, it is much deeper and emotionally investing than I had expected it to be. Now, I didn’t really expect much going into Citrus. Honestly, I just thought it’d be a big mess of yuri fan-service. I’m a little ashamed to say this, but I got hooked in the first episode and have gotten caught up with the current episode within the last six hours or so (which was 10 episodes in total).
What you will experience during this anime is what it is like to experience love and how it affects your life. The way Yuzu becomes so obsessed and in love with Mei which affects her day to day life by constantly nagging at her heart and clouding her mind. It’s so realistic. I can relate and understand how she feels through the entire experience. Now don’t get the wrong idea and think I’m relating 100%. I don’t have a Yaoi complex. All I’m saying is that I can relate to the feelings of love that she has for another person. The way Yuzu gets when she experiences jealousy. How she stays up late at night because she can’t stop her mind from thinking about Mei. It’s all so accurate to how love can affect one’s life.
To add to what the anime has going for it, the yuri aspect really works in favor of the drama. There is always a sense of,”oh shit, are they gonna get caught for being lovers?”. Then there’s also the dilemma in the characters’ mind of whether it’s okay for them to be intimate with each other. With all these dilemmas and depictions of love, it really makes for a great drama. The characters that matter are well developed and show personality. Even the supporting characters serve a purpose in some way.
Overall, the anime is very entertaining and for a drama about Yuri, it is very well done. If the thought of watching an anime about Yuri REALLY bothers you, then don’t watch it. If you choose to not watch, you’ll really be missing out on an excellent drama. So yes, I do recommend giving Citrus a watch if you’re looking for a spicy drama to watch this season. I’m excited to see how the season gets wrapped up and will make sure to do a final review or final thoughts on the anime at a later date.
