Some things are made to be, while others are just…not. Scooby Doo, the franchise about teens who go around unmasking con-men in masks, and Supernatural, the drama of two brothers fighting demons, vampires, and every other spooky creature, do not seem like a match. But, believe it or not, “Scoobynatural” is real, and it’s happening on a TV near you.
The episode of Supernatural begins with brothers Dean and Sam Winchester getting a TV as a gift for fighting off a living stuffed animal. From there, of course, the TV sucks them into an episode of Scooby Doo. It looks like everyone’s favorite angel Castiel will also be along for the ride.
“Once they get over their amazement at being in the cartoon, two things happen,” co-showrunner Robert Singer tells Entertainment Weekly. “They say, ’We’ve been in a situation like this before with the Trickster and I think we’re supposed to play this out.’ And then they realize they’re in a Scooby-Doo cartoon, which makes Dean incredibly excited because Scooby-Doo was his favorite cartoon growing up.”
And for those fans of the show who are wondering: no, this isn’t the work of everyone’s favorite trickster Gabriel, who was recently brought back. “This episode was written a year before we had the idea to bring [Gabriel] back,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb tells Entertainment Weekly. “There is a reference to Gabriel [in the Scooby episode], however, given the timeline of this, Gabriel is not the cause of this specific adventure.”
Even though it is an episode of Scooby Doo they get sucked into it, the creators have promised that it’s going to get dark, as you’d expect from Supernatural. We also see Dean get cozy with Daphne, because of course he is.
The crossover “Scoobynatural” episode will air on Thursday, March 29, at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
