The origin story of Jessica Jones has always been a little trite — terrible accident, chemical spill, new powers. What’s great about the character is not the backstory, it’s her kickass attitude. However, in the new season of Jessica Jones, we’ll be getting a slightly different origin story, adding a new layer of mystery.
From what we see in the trailer, after the accident, Jessica was taken to some sort of facility to be tested on. It looks like a good portion of the season will be dedicated to finding out what exactly happened to her family, fighting an enemy who wants to take over her business, and figuring out if there are others like her out there. She will also be dealing with the trauma from season one’s fight with Kilgrave and some of the fallout from The Defenders.
This trailer is pumped through of plot points but I think it is very reassuring to see that the show will continue to revolve around Jones and her trauma. However, hopefully this won’t be the case for the rest of the show’s run — adding layers upon layers of trauma on a person can start to read as sadistic instead of introspective.
It looks like Kilgrave will be appearance, though it seems like her greatest enemy might be the organization that brought her back from the dead…supposedly, anyways. Does this potentially mean they’ll be trying to tie in Jessica Jones to that obnoxious Black Sky/The Hand business? I certainly hope not. It was one of the things that dragged down The Defenders, and it might take down this incredible as well.
The series sees the return of Krysten Ritter as Jones, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Eka Darville as Malcolm, and David Tennant as Kilgrave.
Jessica Jones Season 2 premieres on Netflix on March 8, 2018.
