When Nintendo revealed their “mobile initiative”, they said they wanted to bring their IPs to mobile phone and tablets to show more and more people what Nintendo had to offer. First came Pokemon, then Mario, then Fire Emblem, and late last year, Animal Crossing. Since November though, there’s been no word on what the next franchise would be to enter the initiative. Now we know, as Nintendo has unveiled Mario Kart Tour.

While details are sparse, including when it’ll exactly come out, one could argue that this could be the biggest of the Nintendo mobile games. For this one will be forced to have a major multiplayer aspect given the nature of Mario Kart. What’s more, Nintendo could easily create and rotate tracks that people play on in Mario Kart Tour to keep things feeling fresh, not unlike what they do in Splatoon.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was a major hit on the Nintendo Switch despite being a port, and many already feel that Mario Kart 9 is in the works. Could the two be released close together and have an impact on one another? We’ll find out.
