What was once a rumor is now a fact, and Dark Souls Remastered is full steam ahead.
Ok, I tried to make that sound menacing and I failed, but you get the idea. The rumored Dark Souls Remastered is now a reality, thank you Fromsoftware. And more surprisingly, it will be the first time that a Dark Souls title will make it’s way to a Nintendo system. The game will be released on May 25, 2018. It’s priced at $39.99 for all systems.
Though, if I’m being completely honest, that could be a curse in disguise. Do you know how many people have tossed their controllers across rooms and at walls when playing that game? Quite a few (thousand). Tossing a Nintendo Switch could be a costly mistake – but rage has a habit of doing that to people. The thought is since this is heading to the Switch, can we please get a Dark Souls amiibo? I’d kill (not kidding) for a Solaire or Sif amiibo. Do it Nintendo, you’ll have all my monies!
*I can’t wait to see all those tears from new players to the game*
The first release of Dark Souls was on the PS3 and Xbox 360. And while the game was playable, the game was very rough. Frame drop was everywhere and it never really managed to sustain its framerate of 30. However, in Dark Souls Remastered, that will (should?) be a thing of the past since both Fromsoftware is stating that the game will get a resolution bump (720p to 1080p) and a high framerate. Now we all see how Dark Souls runs on the Xbox One X, so this should be what we could be in for. As for the Nintendo Switch version, no word on what resolution we’ll see, but I imagine it will be at least 1080p/30FPS. Or at least we can hope it is.
I also hope that they still make it possible to be invaded/invade people. Seriously, don’t take this out of the Switch version.
The oddity here is the PC version. While the PC version of Dark Souls did get released, it came much later. Even still, the game didn’t run the best, but thankfully the Dark Souls community stepped in. Producing plenty of mods, reshaders, and even the holy DSFix, that worked magic with the Dark Souls graphical settings. I’m guessing Fromsoftware and Bandai Namco just want a better version of the game and one that we won’t have to depend on mods to fix. That said, I’m looking forward to seeing what Dark Souls Remastered gives us.
Update: Bandai Namco did get back to us. So apparently, this has been in the works for a while. They were very quiet about this and several members of the Dark Souls community has been working with them on this.
- The Xbox One and PS4 versions will run at 1080p & 60FPS.
- PS4 Pro & Xbox One X (Upscaled 4K,60 FPS), PC (Native 4K, all textures 2K unconverted, 60 FPS)
- The Nintendo Switch will run at 1080p/30FPS docked, 720p/30FPS handheld mode.
- There will be dedicated servers instead of peer 2 peer (p2p). Thank GOD!
- Update to six players online.
- The remaster is running on the Dark Souls 3 engine.
- Will include the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.
- Will feature lots of bug fixes that are still present in Dark Souls.
Sadly, we didn’t get any info on if any of the gameplay would change. Like the previous remaster, Dark Souls II: The Scholar of the First Sin, several aspects of the game changed. Characters shifted around, items got buffed/nerfed, along with several other changes. Looks like Fromsoftware and Bandai Namco haven’t said anything about this. Never the less, we’ve reached out to see what else we can find out.
Guess it’s time to bust out my copy of Dark Souls while I wait for this. But seriously Nintendo…. we need that Dark Souls amiibo. Don’t let us down.
