For many, The Addams Family bridged their love of comedy and dark horror, either in the live-action films or the animated kid’s show. MGM is looking to bring that spooky spirit back with a new animated reboot of the franchise.
Originally a series of one-panel macabre cartoons penned by Charles Addams in the New Yorker, The Addams Family follows Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Pugsley, Wednesday, Lurch, Thing, and Grandma Addams as they approach typical suburban life with a level of darkness that freaks people out. It had three live-action films and an animated television show, which helped develop a cult following.
According to the The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be directed by Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon, who is also producing along with Gail Berman and Alex Schwartz. And if that seems like too crazy a switch over, Pamela Pettler will be bringing her creepy expertise as the screenwriter, having worked on the films Corpse Bride and Monster House. It’s most likely then that the film will be done using computer animation, though no word yet if motion capture will be used.
And who will replace the suave Raul Julia as Gomez? According to Variety, we might be hearing Oscar Isaac in the role, though they are still in talks. No other potential cast has been revealed as of the time of writing.
The unnamed The Addams Family film is currently set to premiere in theaters on October 11th, 2019.
