Frozenbyte released a free Has-Been Heroes expansion pack today that adds several new characters and almost double the unlockable content to their challenging roguelike action/strategy game. It’s available now for free on all platforms.
Fans of Frozenbyte’s popular Trine series will be happy to see the inclusion of three familiar faces in the new lineup of heroes. Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief are each are rendered in the 2D art style of Has-Been Heroes, and feature their own custom animations. These characters become playable once the game’s Epic Quest mode has been unlocked.
Here’s the full list of additions from the press release:
8 Young Heroes to unlock
New “Sky Temple” region
120+ new spells
150+ new items
For players looking for another challenge, the expansion pack also brings two new game modes: “Challenge Mode” and “Seed Mode.” Challenge mode is a single difficult battle with pre-set loadout of characters, items, and spells. By completing a Challenge players unlock a new Young Hero. Seed mode allows players to share a seed number with friends and play the exact same game/run with a timer upon completion. Use this to host a competition between you and your friends and compare strategy.
If you’ve been grinding away at Has-Been Heroes in the hopes of having your name immortalized on the hall of fame website, Frozenbyte also confirmed that they will be continuing to maintain their lists of gamers who have completed 100% of the base game, and will add further special recognition for those who master the expansion as well.
Many of the issues I had with the game in my review back in April had to do with its messy visuals, and I had various grievances with the UI and not being able to tell what spells and items were. Coupled with a gameplay system that wrapped everything around losing, the whole experience can get pretty brutal. The prospect of new items and spells from this Has-Been Heroes expansion pack is interesting, but could end up contributing to these issues depending on how they’re implemented. The update is free, so there’s no reason not to check it out!
Has-Been Heroes is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
