Here we go again
With fears of the gaming industry not being sustainable, we’re hearing that yet another development studio is laying off their staff. This time around, its Telltale Games, who are known for their titles such as The Walking Dead, Batman: The Telltale Series, Tales from the Borderlands, Game of Thrones and others.
The company announced today that they’re in restructuring mode. Sadly, this also means that they’ve laid off 25% of their staff. This resulted in 90 employees from the company being let go.
CEO of the company, Pete Hawley had this to say about the recent events;
“Our industry has shifted in tremendous ways over the past few years. The realities of the environment we face moving forward demand we evolve, as well, reorienting our organization with a focus on delivering fewer, better games with a smaller team,” — Telltale Games CEO Pete Hawley.
He also claims that these layoffs and restructuring will not impact their current games in development. In addition, those who weren’t let go are going to be moved over to different departments. And those who were will be assisted by Telltale Games, to work their way through this transition period.
“I’d like to express our respect for all the contributions that these incredibly talented artists, storytellers and more have made to this company, and that this decision is in no way a reflection on the quality or dedication of their work. We have made available our full career assistance services to help our affected colleagues and friends – and their families – navigate this difficult transition as quickly as possible.”
Sadly it just looks like the company simply got too large for their own good. While they’ve had several enjoyable games in their stable. Many have since claimed that the recent ones were boring and not interesting. Some also walked a fine line, since they are based on established licenses. Meaning they can’t be as creative if they’d liked to be. This whole situation is a shame as I really enjoyed their games.
It’s never good or pleasant to find out that anyone has lost their job. I hope that those affected will land on their feet. Regardless if it’s in the gaming industry or outside of it.
