It’s not often that Disney puts a major project in mid-production limbo, mostly because they don’t want to waste time and money. However, even they know when it’s best to call it quits, which was they did with their “Jack and the Beanstalk” project, Gigantic.
The film was going to be a musical wherein Jack befriends a female giant, and misadventures ensue. On paper, the film looked like it had a strong foundation. Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote Inside Out, and Nathan Greno, co-director of Tangled, were both directing the project, with Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez working on the songs. However, according to the company, the team hit a creative wall and they made the decision to put the kibosh on it rather than put out a lackluster project.
The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, spoke to Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios president Ed Catcall, who had this to say:
“It’s impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn’t working. With Gigantic, we’ve come to that point, and although it’s a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now. We are focusing our energies on another project that has been in the works, which we’ll be sharing more about soon, now set for Thanksgiving 2020.”
What this new project set for 2020 entails is being kept under wraps, but it will be an original feature.
Still, Disney fans have plenty to look forward to, with Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, coming out on November 21, 2018, and Frozen 2 currently set for November 27, 2019, not to mention all of its Star Wars and Marvel projects coming out in the next few months.
