You are not a true 90s kid if you were not totally enraptured by the awesome science adventures of Ms. Frizzle and her class on The Magic School Bus. Now a new generation of kids (and, who are we kidding, adults) can experience the wonder of scientific exploration with Netflix’s The Magic School Bus Rides Again.
While the kids in the class appear to have remained the same, the original Ms. Frizzle will not be at the helm but her younger sister, Fiona Felicity Frizzle, played by comedienne Kate McKinnon. The trailer shows this new teacher taking students to the bottom of the ocean, inside a volcano, and deep underground. There’s a small hint that the original Ms. Frizzle, still voiced by Lily Tomlin, will be going on some adventures of her own. Perhaps best of all, the creators were smart enough not to mess with one of the best aspects of the show — the theme song. The trailer shows off an update version of the theme song in lyric but that upbeat 90s kids vibe is still in full swing, and like most things these days, it’s sung by the impressively talented Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The project, and its new star, were announced earlier this year but there was little in the way of information about when exactly it would be coming out or what it would look like. While the students seem to be voiced by the same actors (or at least people who sound a lot like them), there’s no telling if we’ll be getting all the same quirks from before. After all, it’s not really The Magic School Bus without Carlos’ terrible puns.
The Magic School Bus Rides Again premieres on Netflix on September 22.
