While we all wait on baited breath for The Defenders to grace our screens in August, Netflix moves ahead with Marvel’s solo shows. The latest development is that Luke Cage Season 2 will had Lucy Liu in the director’s chair for the first episode.

While it might seem odd to have an actress calling the shots, fans of the show Elementary are already familiar with Liu’s work behind the scenes — she directed four episodes of the show already.
“What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters,” Liu said in a statement. “It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team.”
“When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking ‘Luke Cage 2.’” executive producer Jeph Loeb said.
The inclusion of a woman of color in the director’s chair is in line with the show’s themes, bringing together a mostly POC cast, discussing important themes about the struggles they face in their communities and in America as a whole. It’s just adds another reason to be excited for the continuation of this groundbreaking, and crowd-pleasing, solo series, along with the third season of Daredevil and the second season of Jessica Jones.
Luke Cage Season 2 does not have a release date yet, but it will like premiere on Netflix sometime in late 2018.
