Nintendo recently released its financial report for the first nine months of the 2024/2025 fiscal year, covering up to December 31, 2024. As usual, the company provided updates on hardware and software sales, giving an overview of its performance. Overall, the results were below expectations, with hardware and software sales falling short.
In the report, Nintendo announced an operating profit of 247.5 billion yen, with ordinary profits of 327.1 billion yen. The Nintendo Switch has now sold 150.86 million units globally, while software sales for the console reached 1.359 billion units, heading toward 1.5 billion. In the reported period, 9.54 million Switch units were sold, broken down as follows:
- 2.74 million Nintendo Switch standard
- 5.07 million Nintendo Switch OLED
- 1.73 million Nintendo Switch Lite
As mentioned, Nintendo lowered its original sales estimates because the year was weaker than expected. Hardware sales were adjusted from 12.5 million to 11 million units, a drop of 1.5 million. Software sales were also lowered, going from 160 million to 150 million units, a reduction of 10 million. Nintendo earned 49.7 billion yen from its mobile business and the use of its intellectual properties.
The report also highlights the steady growth of games released in the current fiscal year, with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (released in September) selling 3.91 million units and Super Mario Party Jamboree (released in October) reaching 6.17 million units. Older titles, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, also performed well, with 5.38 million units sold, bringing the total to 67.35 million units.
In total, 19 titles have surpassed one million copies sold, including games from other publishers. Hardware sales reached 9.54 million units, a drop of 30.6% compared to the previous year, while software sales amounted to 123.98 million units, a decrease of 24.4%. The comparison to last year is affected by the major success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (released in May 2023) and Super Mario Bros. Wonder (released in October 2023). However, the Switch’s sales remain solid despite being in its eighth year of life.
Digital sales reached 245.8 billion yen, a 29% decrease year-over-year, due to lower sales of digital versions of Nintendo Switch games, which contrasts with the overall market trend. Mobile and intellectual property licensing revenues also decreased by 33.9% year-over-year.
Overall, Nintendo’s financial results show a revenue of 956.2 billion yen, with 731.5 billion yen (76.5% of the total) coming from sales outside Japan. Operating profits were 247.5 billion yen, with ordinary profits of 327.1 billion yen and net profits of 237.1 billion yen.
