It seems everything has to have their own account these days. Go to any website offering a service, even if it is just browsing the site itself, and you are prompted to register for an account. Gaming is no different, and while a Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo account make sense because you are purchasing games on those platforms, publisher specific ones have also been all the rage for a while too. SEGA is now part of this wave of publisher accounts, as they’ve launched the SEGA Account.
According to the company, registering for a SEGA account grants users access to exclusive offers and allows for the linking of said account to other platforms, such as Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. Thus other users would also be able to see what SEGA/Atlus games you play, presumably SEGA would also be able to use this data as well.
The major benefit of a SEGA account aside from the usual discounts, access to the news and information on upcoming SEGA events, is special items or perhaps even DLC being unlocked once a game is linked to an account.
The first such game offering this perk, is the upcoming Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Anyone who creates a SEGA account prior to March 7 unlocks the Kazama Kiryu outfit, which grants protagonist Goro Majima the ability to dress like the Dragon of Dojima in the game.
Currently, only one game can be linked which is the Japanese version of Phantasy Star 2 Online, but it seems as though each SEGA release going forward would allow for users to link it to their accounts perhaps unlocking further perks for a game down the line.
Get ready to add another account registration to the list as the increase in SEGA/Atlus releases means there will be plenty of reasons to use a SEGA Account.
