The state of the “Console Wars” is far more “fluid” than you might think. The reason for that being only one of the major three publishers is truly doing well right now, and the other two are dealing with various gaming issues (including bad sales, cancelations, and lack of hardware buys) that are hurting their bottom dollar. The state of Xbox alone is something that Phil Spencer has had to talk about quite a bit recently to help soothe certain critics. However, when it came to talking about the Nintendo Switch 2, the conversation took an interesting turn.
In an interview with Danny Pena, the topic of both Nintendo and the Nintendo Switch 2 came up and Phil Spencer had this to say:
“We love the work that we do with Nintendo. I applaud the moves Nintendo makes… Really looking forward to supporting them with the games that we have. They are such an important part of the industry. Switch is a massive success and I think Switch 2 will be as well”
There’s plenty to read into that, including that Microsoft will be supporting the Switch 2 when it releases later this year. You might recall a rumor that the Master Chief Collection will be coming to the new console, and another rumor stated that EVEN MORE Microsoft franchises will head to Nintendo’s new platform over time.
The irony of this that I bring up constantly on the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast is that Spencer once infamously said in an email that “Nintendo’s future lies in software only” and that it was “his dream” to buy Nintendo and have all their IPs on Xbox. Fast forward to 2025, and the reverse of that last statement might be coming true.
