The Story
We wrap up the mission with Wheeler getting captured. Unfortunately, Twilight didn’t escape unscathed but despite his physical injuries, he was more worried about facing Yor’s wrath when he got home. Luckily for him, she smiled and even admitted that she was only enacting the “advice” that she had received in the previous volume! With everything settled, we enter into a transitional period before the next arc and we are treated to a few side stories.
The first focuses on Yor and Anya making Bond look like different animals from the zoo. Next, we re-enter Eden Academy where everyone’s favorite Sy-on Boy wants to give Anya some rare and expensive tea cakes as a way of thanking her for helping him during the handkerchief incident; however, he wants to find a way to give them to her privately. Becky and Damian’s cohorts won’t leave them alone for a second but when they finally do get some alone time, the headmaster finds them not heeding the call of the warning bell! Not elegant at all!
Next, Yuri feels completely emasculated for not being able to defeat Twilight so he starts off by taking a mission to rough up some common thugs. There, he learns a tough lesson about rushing into a situation haphazardly and it takes a couple of slaps from Chloe to make him realize how reckless he’s becoming. He has an epiphany in the way that only Yuri can and realizes what he must do to better himself and best Twilight once and for all.
Next, Anya and Yor spend a day at the park where they come across a senile old man who has lost his way and can’t locate his house. They go on a whirlwind of a tour trying to find it. When they discover where he lives, it’s a pretty hilarious moment!
Finally… it’s final exam time at Eden! Anya goes into super study mode and takes the exam… her test score is…. Going to be revealed in the next volume!
Characters
Thanks to the episodic nature of this volume, we get quite a bit of character development.
First, with Anya, she tries pretty hard to befriend Damian even though it doesn’t go according to plan (when does it ever); however, where she truly shines is later on when she buckles down and tries her hardest to improve her scores for the final exam! Of course, I’m expecting something hilarious to come from all of it but if she succeeds, then that is a major step in the right direction!
As for Damian… the signs are all there that he’s falling in love with Anya but can’t admit it. The mere fact that his mother went out of her way to get the tea cakes for him and expects him to befriend her shows that other people are starting to see what he can’t bring himself to admit! It’s a slow burn but I love every small nugget that we get along the way!
Yuri is still the overprotective little brother who can seemingly smell his sister in the middle of the city while sitting confined inside of a car… but be that as it may, his determination to find, best, and defeat Twilight is growing out of control and, even if he’s slow on the uptake, he’s starting to realize that there are more ways to protect Yor without throwing his body in front of a truck (Yes, that happened in this volume.)
Fiona does get a little bit of time to shine. Her battle with Wheeler under her codename of Nightfall showed just how possessed she can become when it comes to protecting Twilight. Then, when she’s recovering in the hospital, she turns into a full-blown tsundere but begins to realize that everyone is aware of her feelings for him. Sadly, we all know that Yor and Twilight are going to end up together once Operation Strix is over eventually but Fiona can hope, can’t she?
Final Thoughts
This was a bit of a short arc but with Wheeler’s capture, we jumped right back into filler chapters. I’m not sure if the whole final exam test is the beginning of a new arc or just another filler but since it has everything to do with Operation Strix, there’s a high chance that this leads into the next arc which could be refocusing on Eden Academy. If so, it would be a breath of fresh air as all of these missions have deviated from the main point of this entire series. Not that the missions weren’t fun or entertaining, I just felt that the main mission kept taking a backseat to everything else. We are overdue for more Eden content so let’s hope this leads into it. Besides, we need more Anya x Damian development stat!
Outside of that, the side missions were fun, especially Yuri’s. Frankie stopping by with Anya and suggesting they brush his bushy hair was quite hilarious as well. Twilight always having an answer and a plan for everything is prime Deus ex Machina content but also falls in line with him being regarded as the world’s greatest spy so it works. While a bit on the campy side, this was still a great volume of Spy x Family!
