While the gaming industry is different from other careers in many ways, the endgame is always the same. Eventually, you stop making games. Some people do it as long as possible or attempt to be “part of the process” in other ways. Others find meaning in “getting out” while they feel they’re on top. For Hironobu Sakaguchi, he’s been in the gaming industry for decades, and we owe a lot to him, including the birth of the Final Fantasy series. As such, it shouldn’t be surprise that he wants his last game to be like Final Fantasy VI, which is one of the best in the entire series.
This reveal came in an interview with The Verge, where the creator talked about his long career, the current state of JRPGs, and so on. When talking about his latest game, Fantasian Neo Dimension, he noted this:
I was thinking of making Fantasian Neo Dimension my final work, but the fantastic team that was assembled to complete this project was so enjoyable to work with that I found it hard to part ways. Humans are greedy creatures, aren’t we? For that reason, I’m currently working on a new project with the same team that worked on Fantasian Neo Dimension. It’s generally going to follow a similar style to my previous works, and it’ll be something that can be a successor to Final Fantasy VI in a good way — our goal is to create something old but new at the same time. It’ll be part two of my farewell note.
We wish Hironobu Sakaguchi the best in his final gaming effort. He absolutely deserves to go out on a high note.
