Japan is looking at adapting AI technology to combat piracy. The new AI project is said to be a $2 million project that will detect and counter anime and manga pirating websites. By training the AI, the system will detect images, layouts, and advertisements of piracy websites.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs stated:
“There are limitations to finding pirated sites with the human eye, as it takes time and cost. We would like to develop effective countermeasures to reduce pirated sites and protect rights holders.”
This new system will make it easier for companies to submit takedown requests through Google. Major companies such as VIZ Media, Toei Animation, Naver WEBTOON, and others have been successful as of late in removing pirated sites manually. They hope that this new AI-driven system will hasten and uncomplicate their efforts.
