Deepest Fear is an Upcoming Chilling Underwater Horror Title from Variable State

By Keith MitchellDecember 6, 2024
Deepest Fear — Announcement

During the PC Gaming Show that took place on December 5th, 2024, a brand new game called Deepest Fear was revealed, from developer Variable State. While I haven’t heard of this developer before, it has caught my eye with the reveal of its new Horror-based first-person title, which takes in a decaying underwater facility.

But what makes things even worse is whatever these creatures are in the game that are trying to kill you, and everyone else comes from water. And you are surrounded by a lot of water; in the pipes, puddles on the floor, or all the water that’s just outside of you, all of what could be potentially an encounter waiting to happen.

Check out the trailer for the game.

According to the Steam page, this is what we know about the game;

As Dr. Danni Carroll, players are thrust into the labyrinthine depths of Neptune, a mysterious retro-futuristic facility hiding dark secrets and dangerous truths. Trapped far from rescue, Danni must contend with hostile creatures that spawn from water sources, a failing infrastructure, and shifting, submerged environments that change with each moment. With survival on the line, players must harness their wits and an arsenal of tools to uncover the mysteries surrounding a project masterminded by Danni’s estranged father.

Incorporating the creative problem-solving of the Immersive Sim genre and Metroidvania-style exploration, DEEPEST FEAR pushes the horror genre forward with a chilling blend of atmosphere, environment puzzles, real-time fluid simulation, and high-stakes survival mechanics. Inspired by iconic works of cinema such as The Abyss and The Thing, the game is set to release on PC, with future announcements planned.

Just by the trailer alone, I’m getting vibes of several of my favorite horror-based first-person games, including titles such as Dead Space, F.E.A.R, Bioshock, Alien: Isolation, SOMA, and Half-Life, just to name a few.

This is while I’m holding out hope that Deepest Fear is going to be that next game that makes me go “Oh Shit”, as I drop my controller or back away slowly from my PC. I’ll be keeping tags of Deepest Fear from now on.

There’s no announced release date for Deepest Fear, and so far the game seems to be only announced for the PC.
