As 2024 comes to a close, gamers worldwide are already anticipating the thrilling possibilities that 2025 holds. For those who seek challenge and love immersing themselves in rich, combat-driven worlds, the upcoming lineup of Action RPGs promises to be particularly exciting. These games, celebrated for delivering both exhilaration and frustration in equal measure, continue to push the boundaries of storytelling, gameplay mechanics, and sheer difficulty.
Whether you’re a devoted fan of the genre or just curious about the titles poised to dominate conversations in the coming year, you’re in for a treat. In this article, I’ll highlight several upcoming anticipated action RPG and Soulslike releases on the horizon that deserve a spot on your radar.
Path of Exile 2 (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S)
You might be thinking, “But wait, Path of Exile 2 (early access) released on December 6, 2024—doesn’t that make it a 2024 game?” And you’d be right. However, as an early access title, it offers a different story for those who don’t want to pay for a game that will be free-to-play in 2025 (aside from microtransactions).
Path of Exile 2 isn’t just a sequel; it’s a combination of what made the original so compelling—and, admittedly, intimidating—for many players. While also making the game more inviting for those who wanted to play the original game, but didn’t do the complexity. The revamped gem and skill system streamlines customization while preserving the depth that fans love. The massive passive skill tree, a hallmark of the series, is still there, alongside new characters, enhanced visuals, and refined gameplay that’s so satisfying it practically dares you to play just one more session. From what I’ve experienced so far, this game grabs your attention, shakes you to the core, and leaves you hungry for more.
For newcomers who found the first game overwhelming, this sequel serves as an excellent entry point. Early access has been a blast, despite a few issues that are typical of early access titles and are being ironed out. For those who want to wait, 1.0 should be a better offering thanks to all the early access adjustments.

Elden Ring Nightreign
Coming seemingly out of nowhere, Elden Ring: Nightreign was announced during the 2024 Game Awards, despite FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki previously stating the studio was “done with Elden Ring for a while.” While the game shares the iconic namesake of the 2022 blockbuster I still can’t put down, this new entry takes the franchise in a bold new direction. Set place in a different world from the main Elden Ring game., Nightreign introduces a fresh twist on the formula and a procedurally generated world. Players—either solo or in teams of three—are thrust into a realm where they must spend three battling creatures, scavenging gear, and powering up for the real challenge of a boss fight on the night of the third day
When darkness falls, players face off against a boss. Fail, and it’s back to square one. The cycle begins anew. This roguelike structure marks uncharted territory for FromSoftware, as Nightreign is the studio’s first foray into the genre. Adding to the intrigue, the game includes enemies from Dark Souls and multiplayer cooperation, though players will be using preset characters with no customization—a notable departure from the studio’s usual approach.
It’s Elden Ring. It’s FromSoftware. You already know what to expect: an intense, unforgettable experience. The game is slated for release in 2025 and reportedly has been in development for some time. One thing’s for certain: Elden Ring: Nightreign is shaping up to be yet another masterpiece. Well, assuming the coop isn’t complete crap like it is in the other Fromsoftware titles. Let’s not argue about that—there’s a reason why modders created a mod for Elden Ring on the PC.
While there’s no announced release date for the game, Bandai Namco and Fromsoft will be hosting a Network Test for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S… PC gamers are not invited to this party.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is an upcoming dark fantasy Soulslike game set in China during the twilight of the Ming Dynasty. Developed by Chinese studio Leenzee Games, the title draws heavily from Chinese mythology, weaving historical elements with grotesque supernatural themes to create a haunting, immersive experience.
First revealed during Xbox and PlayStation showcases, the game’s early gameplay footage showcased combat and mechanics reminiscent of Koei Tecmo’s Nioh and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. While the initial presentation had some rough edges, fans of those titles will likely find Wuchang: Fallen Feathers appealing, thanks to its familiar yet intriguing approach.
The story follows Wuchang, a protagonist seemingly caught in a desperate battle against horrifying mutations and god-like entities. Unfortunately, detailed information about the narrative and gameplay remains scarce at this point. However, the game’s atmospheric setting and rich incorporation of Chinese mythology already set it apart from other upcoming releases in the genre.
It’s unclear whether Wuchang: Fallen Feathers will fully embrace its Soulslike foundation, lean more into action RPG elements, or strike a balance between the two. Either way, the game has captured my attention. Be sure to keep a close eye on its development to see how it evolves and whether it can carve out a unique space in the crowded world of dark fantasy RPGs.

No Rest For The Wicked
Wait, Keith… wasn’t this also a 2024 released game? Yes, but it was also an early access game and it’s changed so much that you can’t even call it the same game. No Rest for the Wicked sounds like a thrilling experience with its dark fantasy setting and unique blend of action RPG mechanics. With the backing of Moon Studios, known for their expertise in creating immersive worlds through Ori and the Blind Forest, it’s clear that this game is designed with deep, rewarding gameplay in mind.
The Dark Souls-inspired combat will likely draw players in who enjoy methodical and challenging encounters, but the added layers—such as gathering resources to craft gear and the opportunity to purchase and decorate homes—seem like fresh touches that could set No Rest for the Wicked apart. The mix of exploration, secrets, and boss battles promises to keep players engaged long after the initial story.

Avowed
Avowed is an upcoming role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment, set in the fantasy world of Eora, the same universe as their previous title, Pillars of Eternity. The game takes place in the Eastern Reach, a region filled with diverse factions, ancient ruins, and magical creatures. The story centers around a mysterious threat to the region, where players take on the role of an envoy from the Aedyr Empire, uncovering secrets, forging alliances, and battling both supernatural and human enemies.
Avowed promises deep narrative storytelling and intricate dialogue choices, along with tactical combat that includes spellcasting and strategic decision-making. Combining traditional RPG elements with modern gameplay features, Avowed offers an expansive world to explore, a detailed character progression system, and multiple ways to approach quests and challenges. With Obsidian’s signature world-building and storytelling, Avowed is shaping up to be a highly anticipated title for RPG fans.

The First Berserker: Khazan
The First Berserker: Khazan is an upcoming action RPG set in the world of Dungeon & Fighters. Featuring fast-paced hack-and-slash combat akin to God of War, with a touch of Kentaro Miura’s Berserk flair, the game draws heavily from Nordic and Eastern European folklore. It follows the story of Khazan, a cursed warrior who becomes the first berserker—a character class featured in Dungeon Fighter Online and DNF Duel, that takes place hundreds of years before the original story of Dungeons & Fighters takes place.
Though The First Berserker: Khazan recently made a splash at the 2024 Game Awards, it had already captured the attention of Soulslike fans. A limited-time playable demo was available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and based on my brief time with it, the game is shaping up to scratch the itch for anyone craving dark fantasy action.
While it leans more into hack-and-slash gameplay than the methodical pacing of a traditional Soulslike, that’s perfectly fine. Mark your calendars for The First Berserker: Khazan—releasing on March 27, 2025. It promises to be a thrilling addition to the action RPG genre. D

Eternal Strands
I’ve been following Eternal Strands ever since it was announced by Yellow Brick Games, a promising new start-up studio made up of members with experience on several AAA titles. This isn’t your average action RPG; the game takes inspiration from classics like Shadow of the Colossus, Dragon’s Dogma, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom, while introducing a unique physics-based combat system. Once you see the game in action, it’s easy to spot these influences. According to Yellow Brick Games, their goal was to make players feel like fantasy superheroes, and from what I’ve seen so far, it looks like they’ve done just that.
The protagonist, Brynn, is a descendant of the Enclave, a mysterious culture that had sealed itself away from the world for reasons unknown. Now, Brynn is determined to uncover the truth and embark on a journey to find her ancestral home, armed with powers to manipulate Frost, Fire, and Kinetic abilities. The possibilities for combos to defeat enemies sound thrilling. Additionally, Brynn can climb almost any surface in the world, offering a unique sense of freedom. Eternal Strands will feature a day/night cycle, dynamic weather, and a crafting system that lets players create gear and items as needed.
All in all, Eternal Strands sounds like an exciting adventure, and fingers crossed that Yellow Brick Games can deliver on this promising concept.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows stands as one of the most anticipated entries in the franchise, finally bringing the series to Japan—specifically, the late 16th-century feudal era. The Assassin’s Creed series once helped define the open-world action-adventure game genre before transitioning into more of an action RPG. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows aims to continue this evolution toward a top-tier action RPG while recapturing the elements that originally made the franchise so beloved.
Notably, the game revamps classic mechanics such as parkour, stealth mechanics including bringing back double assassinations. On top of this, the game sees the return of two playable characters— a feature that hasn’t been seen since Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. These mechanics, combined with a darker, more mature narrative, promise a refreshing return to the series’ roots while delivering a refined and immersive experience.

Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom has been on an impressive streak with its Monster Hunter series, delivering hit after hit. The momentum started with the groundbreaking Monster Hunter World and its expansion, Iceborne, and continued with Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak. Now, Capcom is poised to raise the bar again with its next-generation entry, Monster Hunter Wilds.
The game promises an abundance of monsters, both new and familiar, alongside a dynamic weather system that not only changes the biomes but also introduces unexpected challenges and monsters mid-hunt. Exciting new mechanics, like the innovative Focus Mode and the ability to wield two weapons in combat, add layers of strategy to the gameplay. Fan-favorite weapons also make a triumphant return, ensuring something for everyone. With its bold ambition to be bigger and better in every way, Monster Hunter Wilds feels like the ultimate evolution of the franchise, and I can’t wait to dive in.

Dying Light: The Beast
Dying Light: The Beast takes everything we love about the series and kicks it up a notch. Set in a huge, once-bustling city now ravaged by a mysterious infection, you play as the returning protagonist from Dying Light and Dying Light: The Following, Kyle Crane, trying to survive in a world where the infected are smarter and scarier than ever. The game’s remote mountainous location of Castor Woods adds a whole new level of challenge, with unpredictable weather, a day-night cycle that keeps you on your toes, and environmental hazards that make every moment feel like a struggle.
You can call this a bit of a revenge title as Kyle Crane has been a captive for 13 years and was subjected to all sorts of experiences against his will. Now that he’s free, he sets his sights on the person responsible for this. Interestingly enough, Dying Light: The Beast started out as an expansion for Dying Light 2: Stay Human, and instead will be released as a standalone title that will still be lengthy enough for fans of the series.
