It’s been an interesting week for the Zelda franchise. The live-action movie is still in development and is set to come out sometime this decade, and the series’ latest title, The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, was revealed to have sold about 2.5 million copies in just a couple of days. So, yeah, good news all around. Sticking with the video game for a bit, though, two of the main people behind the game, Producer Eiji Aonuma and director Satoshi Terada, noted that they almost had a big difference in the game but decided against it. Specifically, they almost made Link talk.
This was revealed in an interview with Famitsu, where the two stated that initially, Link did talk aloud in the game, but they backpedaled after a few attempts to make it feel “right:”
“I had Link talk a little bit,” Terada noted. “No matter what I made him say, it just didn’t feel right.”
Aonuma added to this by revealing that when they couldn’t figure out how to make it work, they just decided to put it into the game’s story that he lost his voice:
“Link would never speak like that. It felt really strange. Nobody knew what Link would say – that’s only natural, because he’s never spoken before. So we had to come up with a setting where he couldn’t speak, and that’s how we came up with part of the story.”
Ironically, this problem is one that the upcoming live-action movie will have to deal with as it goes forward. In the meantime, for my full thoughts on The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, check out my review!
