Earlier today, Capcom and Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group announced a new Monster Hunter mobile game, Monster Hunter Outlanders. Although many details about the game were initially sparse, Mr. Dong Huang, Producer at Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group, and Mr. Genki Sunano, Producer at Capcom, took to YouTube following the announcement to address some of the pressing questions.
For starters, while the game was only recently revealed, it was TiMi Studio Group that reached out to Capcom four years ago to propose the partnership. TiMi Studio Group’s enthusiasm for the Monster Hunter series was evident, as shown in the video with the impressive display of Monster Hunter items and statues. Capcom agreed that collaborating with TiMi Studio Group would be a good fit, and the project moved forward.
One of the bigger questions about the game has also been answered: the game will feature original characters who will hunt familiar creatures from the series. The new gameplay footage shown provides a clearer sense of what to expect and conveys this better than the initial Monster Hunter Outlanders reveal trailer.
As mentioned previously, the game will feature an open world, now confirmed to include swamps, deserts, and forests—all seamlessly connected and playing a significant role during hunts. Notably, players will be able to craft gear, such as grappling hooks and gliders, to facilitate exploration. It seems TiMi Studio may have taken cues from the ill-fated Wild Hearts, which was the first title to explore a similar concept.
Unlike Monster Hunter World, Rise, or the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds, players will choose from several distinct characters, each with unique origins, appearances, personalities, and gear. Palicos will return, along with two new companion types, referred to as “buddies,” who will support players in combat. Weapons from past titles, such as the Light Bowgun, Dual Blades, and Bow, were also shown, with more set to make an appearance.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Monster Hunter game without iconic monsters. Pukei-Pukei, Jyuratodus, Barroth, and Rathian were showcased, as well as a new creature: a mutated Rathian, about which details remain under wraps for now. More information about the creatures will be revealed at a later date.
After being briefed, it all feels like Monster Hunter Outlanders is a mobile version of Monster Hunter World, which I wouldn’t mind playing while on the go. It also makes sense now that I think about it, especially since Monster Hunter World and Rise are the next-generation titles in the series, and I’m sure Capcom would love to get more players involved with the series given its popularity.
