It seems like the gaming world needs some truly positive and uplifting things to talk about, so let’s showcase Masahiro Sakurai’s latest video from his Creating Games channel! In it, he notes that there are numerous games out there that advertise long stories and need to invest dozens, if not hundreds, of hours into completing it. Except, that’s not always possible for gamers. They don’t have “all the time in the world” to play a game, and so, developers need to be mindful of that when they create a title.
Sakurai fairly notes that a game’s quality can lead to players not just enjoying things for hours on end, but beating a game repeatedly because they want to enjoy it again. He even apologizes for making Smash Bros so addicting that people play it for “thousands of hours.”
Why is this thought from Masahiro Sakurai apt? That’s because there are NUMEROUS video games that pride themselves on having “vast worlds with dozens or hundreds of hours of content to enjoy,” and yet the worlds are empty, and the content isn’t that enjoyable. Yet, instead of going back to making quality games, they simply double down and attempt to “do better the next time,” which is missing the point.
We don’t always have time to play super long games with our super busy lives. So, making something decently-sized, fun, and enjoyable, and gamers will treasure it forever.
