Last week, Gunfire Games announced its final DLC for one of my favorite titles in the past few years, Remnant II. Entitled Remnant II: The Dark Horizon, the name alone gives me chills. While this DLC was supposed to be released already, Gunfire Games made the painful but correct decision to delay it so that it can be the best it can be. Remnant II: The Dark Horizon will be released in September 2024, so we don’t have much longer to wait.
If you’ve been playing the game you’ve likely figured that this DLC will have something to do with the world of N’Erud. This makes sense since the previous DLCs had us revisit Losomn with The Awakened King DLC and Yasesha in The Forgotten Kingdom DLC. Following the trend, N’Erud, the world I liked the least, will be the final world we’ll visit in Remnant II.
As for what we can expect, the developer has stated this DLC will be much more expansive than the previous ones. Which is music to my ears, since those were on the short side. The first DLC, I managed to beat it in under an hour after my first playthrough and I wanted more. Though I wonder, just how large will this final DLC be?
There will be a new game mode that will be included with this DLC. What is it? No idea. However, back in December 2023, Remnant II’s creative director David Adams did mention that he wasn’t opposed to adding a game mode similar to a survivor game type. Maybe something where players fight off waves of incoming enemies. It’s worth mentioning that Remnant: From the Ashes did feature a survival mode. A game mode that’s absent from Remnant II, much to the dismay of the community.
That’s all we know, as Gunfire Games hasn’t provided much information about this DLC, which is perfectly fine with me. I love it when companies keep upcoming games under wraps, so I’m even more excited when I’m finally able to play them. Still, I do have some trepidation about The Dark Horizon.
Why, you ask? While the DLCs were fun, they didn’t add much to the main story of Remnant II, and I want some closure, damn it. Ever since the events following Remnant II‘s ending, players have been scratching their heads and wondering what exactly it all meant. Spoilers ahead if you haven’t played the game or beaten it yet.
At the end of Remnant II, Clementine essentially resets the universe in an attempt to remove the corruption introduced by the Root. This didn’t work as we still see the Root present in the two DLCs available for the game. Clementine has gone missing and we’ve been looking for her throughout the DLCs.
She’s not the only one, as Commander Ford, who still has a presence throughout the DLCs, disappeared ever since we interacted with him at the beginning of Remnant II. So, where is Ford? What is he up to? Is he going to be a protagonist in the final DLC? Or is Gunfire Games planning another Remnant game?
Let’s not forget yet another archetype that will be added to the game, sparking another wave of curiosity and collaboration among the Remnant community as we try to figure out how to unlock it. That part is always fun, especially when the developers chime in to let us know if we’re close or drop hints to nudge us in the right direction.
See, these are the things that keep me up at night because, yet again, I’m looking for some closure. I know Gunfire Games has something planned, but as to what it is, well, only the developer knows for sure.
Remnant II is available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
