There is a lot of news about the upcoming NBA 2K25 from 2K Games. The game features a new MyCareer, MyPlayer story, WNBA players, cover stars and so much more. So here is a news round-up of everything announced so far for the biggest NBA simulation game on the market.
Lead the Next Great Dynasty with New MyCAREER and MyPLAYER Builder Updates
First, 2K unveiled new upgrades coming to MyPLAYER Builder and MyCAREER in NBA 2K25 on PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. With more ways to craft in MyPLAYER Builder, an all-new Takeover system, and improved Badge progression, players can create their ideal MyPLAYER and stamp their name in the history books in a brand-new MyCAREER. These new updates and features ensure that whether a user is new to NBA 2K, a returning player, or a savvy veteran, there’s more than one way to play.
“MyPLAYER is the start of every journey and in NBA 2K25 we’ve added more ways for players to craft their legacy in a tailored and authentic way as they chase the win,” said Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at Visual Concepts. “We designed MyPLAYER Builder to cater to different playstyles and strategic preferences for players of all levels. MyPLAYER is the start of the journey, and we want players to craft their legacy in a tailored and authentic way as they chase greatness.”
MyPLAYER and MyCAREER have a variety of new features and improvements this year, including:
-
MyPLAYER Builder: The NBA 2K25 MyPLAYER Builder caters to all different playstyles and strategic preferences with a myriad of new possible archetypes to create. NBA 2K25 offers access to more information on a player’s Build than ever before. Dig deeper with the opportunity to preview all assets a Build now qualifies for, including Badges, Takeovers, and Signature Animations as well as customization options like jump shot and dunk packages. Players can leverage the Build Tester and participate in 3v3, 5v5, or the new Freestyle practice option to preview and tinker with their new Build.
-
A Brand-New Takeover System: NBA 2K25 introduces a brand-new Takeover system, with 72 Takeovers and 14 Takeover Abilities. Each Takeover targets different attributes and has five levels, ranging from Level 1 when a player is heating up to Level 5 when they’re red hot. As players excel on the court, the Takeover Meter fills up, gradually boosting the targeted attributes as players rise up the five levels. Once a player reaches Level 5, their Takeover Abilities will turn on automatically and if used effectively, it can make them the most dominant player on the court for a short time.
-
Improved Badges: Badges in NBA 2K25 are more impactful and all-encompassing than ever before. With the list refined to 40 Badges, each one now feels equally valuable and desirable. Badge progression is designed to match a player’s on-court actions – the more a player uses a Badge the faster it will progress. NBA 2K25 will introduce a new level of Badges higher than Hall of Fame called Legend. Also new this year are Badge Elevators that can boost individual badges to higher levels and Cap Breakers to increase attribute ratings above max potential “caps” set at build creation. Badge Perks and Performance Multipliers will also receive updated perks.
-
Heart of a Dynasty. MyCAREER in NBA 2K25 is all about building the next great dynasty. Ranked against the best dynasties in NBA history, players will vie to make deep playoff runs and win championships in order to climb the Dynasty Rankings and etch their legacy above the best. Before winning it all, players can lay the foundation of their career and relive their MyPLAYER’s journey to the NBA from high school to FIBA games in a new flashback story called Heart of a Dynasty. Finally, Key Games are back and upgraded to give players more choice and control over how they progress through their MyPLAYER’s career.
NBA 2K25 Showcases All-New Stephen Curry MyNBA Era and Introduces MyGM
Immersive MyGM Mode Offers Dynamic Role Playing Experience on New Gen for First Time
2K announced innovations coming to MyNBA and MyGM in NBA 2K25 for PlayStation®5 (PS5™), Xbox Series X|S, and PC. MyNBA introduces the Steph Era, where fans can relive or rewrite the championship-studded legacy of Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. MyGM is available on new-generation consoles for the first time, and players will step into the role of an NBA General Manager to create the foundation of a dynasty, from the fanbase to team ownership.
“We’re excited for players to customize the MyNBA and MyGM modes in NBA 2K25 to shape the league in their image,” said Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA 2K Development at Visual Concepts. “Paying respect to arguably the best shooter to ever live, we welcome The Steph Era as another historic NBA Era. The new additions are designed to create a unique world of basketball fully under your control.”
Both MyNBA and MyGM have a variety of new features and improvements this year, including:
MyGM
- Full NBA General Manager Experience: MyGM arrives on New Gen for the first time enabling players to take on the role as an NBA Team’s General Manager. Redesigned into a dynamic role-playing franchise experience, players start by choosing their own GM backstory to define their managerial style. From an Ex-Player transitioning to the front office, a Previous Scout, Savant of Finance, or a Closer among others, each backstory will determine initial attributes and baseline boosts leading to different playstyles for running a franchise.
- Dynamic Conversations & Goals: A core part of MyGM is conversations with staff and players to manage everyone’s needs and help execute a player’s Goals. In NBA 2K25, MyGM introduces dynamic conversations for a highly customisable experience – these simplified yet meaningful interactions significantly affect a player’s team trajectory and outcomes. Backstory and attribute ratings can come into play during these conversations and unlock more paths by determining the dialogue choices available to respond in a way that best satisfies a player’s goals.
- MyGM Building: Brand new is the MyGM Building, a free-roaming space where players can take control of their MyGM to carry out responsibilities as the brains of the team. Engage in in-person conversations with staff members or the Governor for a more authentic feel.
- Perk System: NBA 2K25 introduces a new perk system that allows players to unlock perks with extra capabilities that help increase GM skills upon achieving goals. Take advantage of an initial set of 55 Perks in MyGM starting at launch, from Winning Culture to Data Analyst, that offer a boost to specific areas of a player’s GM skills, both on and off the court.
MyNBA
- The Steph Era: Eras in MyNBA take players back in time to start their league during the greatest periods of NBA history. In NBA 2K25, players can now begin their journey in 2016 and immerse themselves with Stephen Curry and the Warriors. Relive the legendary run alongside superstar teammates Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant or attempt to rewrite history by challenging one of the greatest dynasties ever assembled in professional basketball.
- NBA Cup: The Emirates NBA Cup features more integrations in MyNBA with competitive group stage play and intense single-elimination knockout rounds to test a team’s depth and resilience.
- League Expansions and Contractions: Expansions and contractions have been adjusted within the game, giving players full control over how they shape their team and the league over time. Whether it’s recreating the league’s expansion boom in the 80s and 90s or dramatically increasing (or decreasing) the size of the league in the Modern Era, this unlocks more possibilities to customize the MyNBA experience.
The W Receives New Features and Improvements
Become the GOAT, measured against WNBA greats of the past and present including the 2024 Rookie class
2K today revealed new features and improvements debuting across The W in NBA® 2K25 on PlayStation®5 (PS5™), Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Players can eclipse WNBA Legends and clash with rising stars in NBA 2K25, becoming the GOAT of The W against past and present greats. New updates include changes to The W Online including an all-new Mentorship feature and now available in The W, players can partake in press conferences, where players will be asked questions based on their performance levels in-game after a competition.
“This WNBA season has been electric, showcasing incredible talent, especially from the dynamic rookies making their mark to the legends. We wanted NBA 2K25 to reflect this action-packed season and show how The W is about chasing the win,” said Felicia Steenhouse, Senior Producer at Visual Concepts. “This year, we’ve deepened the immersion and opportunities for players to leave their mark in the WNBA, as we’ve worked with the league to scan more WNBA players making it as true-to-life as possible. We even re-worked our engine to ensure smaller details, such as eyelashes and an increased library of hairstyles, would be properly represented.”
The W returns with an array of features and improvements this year, all to become the GOAT, including:
- Pursuit of Greatness: Players vie to climb the all-time ranks in the new Pursuit of Greatness story as they build a legacy to eclipse the best players in WNBA history and attempt career-defining moments throughout the journey. As the overarching narrative of their first season, players will be dropped into the captivating 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year race as they compete against players like Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark and Kamilla Cardoso. As players bolster their resume with on-court accomplishments like championships and awards, their progress will be visualised on detailed graphs that illustrate where they are in their career, and how they stack up against the next player on the GOAT list that they’re chasing.
- Press Conferences: For the first time, press conferences are coming to The W allowing players to shape the narrative of their career and the league as a whole. Press conferences will happen after key moments and games like breaking a record, winning an award like Rookie of the Year or crossing a career milestone. When competing against someone on the GOAT list, like NBA 2K25 cover athlete A’ja Wilson, the questions asked could vary depending on a player’s performance, be it good or bad.
- The W Online: The W Online has moved to a stunning new outdoor court in a forest grove, and players can join 3v3 multiplayer games amidst a gorgeous backdrop of redwood trees. Additionally, Weekly Community Goals are back in NBA 2K25 and require a collective effort from all players to accomplish them. These goals now track new stats, like the number of excellent green shot releases and teammate grades.
- Game Changers Mentorship: The W Online in NBA 2K25 builds on the Game Changer status—earned by contributing to the weekly Community Goals—with a new feature called Mentorship. On top of special rewards like Player Boosts for MyPLAYER and teammates, players have the chance to take on another contender, who is not yet a Game Changer, under their wing as a mentee. Players who help guide their mentees to complete challenges will receive a boost to their Community Goal contributions.
