A sad trend we’re seeing in Hollywood is studios thinking that they can just throw out “any film” and expect to make money off of it. That’s not how it works…at all. And if they don’t believe in a film, they won’t plug it properly, and good films will just be ignored in theaters. With the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film, you’d think that this was a “slam dunk” for Marvel and its stars given how much hype there is going into it, and the projected box office numbers. However, that’s not true at all. Both Hugh Jackman & Ryan Reynolds had clear wishes to be met before they even tried filming it.
SFX Magazine got to chat with director Shawn Levy about the upcoming movie, and he noted that Ryan Reynolds personally asked him to direct Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds went so far as to say that the wouldn’t come back if Levy didn’t help the film:
“So I’m shooting The Adam Project with Ryan up in Vancouver. And he says, ‘Okay, I know you’re going to say no, but I’ll only do Deadpool again if you direct it.’ I told him I’d love to direct that movie, because the truth is, if you work in the big-canvas filmmaking space, as I have since those Night at the Museum movies, it’s a dream to be able to tell a story on that kind of epic and anthemic canvas.”
By all accounts, this movie will indeed be epic, and we’ll have Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy to thank for that!
