It’s another slice-of-life romance story so, of course, I wasn’t going to pass this one up. At first, the synopsis for Make Heroine ga Oosugiru! screamed “harem;” however, upon closer inspection, it seemed to be a bit different in that regard. Will this show prove itself to be different?
Let’s go!
First Episode Synopsis
Kazuhiko Nukumizu is someone who prefers to just sink into the background and go about his daily life. One day, while eating at a café, he oversees and overhears his classmate Anna Yanami and her supposed boyfriend talking about him going to date another girl by the name of Karen. Anna eventually tells him to just go… so he does. After he leaves, she desperately wants one last kiss from him so she drinks his soda from his straw… until she’s caught by Kazuhiko staring at her. He tries to play it off but she goes over to his table, orders a bunch of food, goes on a nonsensical rant, and makes him pay for it all.
At school, he wants to be paid back for the food but Anna doesn’t have any money. Instead, she offers to pay him back by making him bentos until it totals up to the amount that she owes him. By bento, she means buying him food from the konbini or giving him a giant block of rice. All the while, she still complains about getting dumped even though she was, technically, never going out with him, to begin with.
In the end, Kazuhiko finds Anna up on the school roof where reality has finally settled in for her. There, he recounts how high school couples don’t last and those who graduate are most likely to break up, meaning that high school romance is a waste; however, after his interactions with Anna, he begins to wonder if a high school romance is something he would like to try during his teenage years.
Worth Watching?
MAYBE – I want to give this a YES because there is nothing wrong with the premise. The issue that I have with the show is the main female character, Anna. She’s too over-the-top for me and someone that I find super annoying. I know it’s supposed to come off as comedic; however, I just go get that from her at all. She’s all over the place, a bit mental, and, in a way, manipulative. If she wasn’t, then Kazuhiko doesn’t have enough of a backbone to tell her that her problems are not his and she should look to someone else to vent. Instead, he just lets her walk all over him and now he’s roped into eating lunch with her every day.
So, that in and of itself is a bit contradictory. He can’t tell her to buzz off, but he can grow a spine and continuously demand his money back when he pays for her food. Talk about selective bravery. Kazu is also kind of an idiot as well… I know he probably avoided it on purpose but how do you forget that you’re in the literary club? There is a bit of an explanation to it; however, it just seems as if he joined the club just for the sake of joining it without the intention of ever going. The show could have spun that to say he joined it just to get them to stop pestering him but since he keeps to himself, he saw no point in attending.
I’m pretty sure that’s what actually happened but it wasn’t explained that way (at least that’s not what the subtitles said). Instead, he came off like an idiot who forgot he was part of a club. But he went and apologized anyway… so… he’s not afraid to admit that he ghosted his club or demand his money back but he can’t be bothered to tell someone to keep their problems to themselves.
I get that the reason for that is Anna being very pushy and selective in her hearing… so she probably wouldn’t have listened since “leave me alone” wasn’t the words she wanted to hear. She already proved that when he continually asked why she ordered French fries. Honestly, I would have just gotten up and left. Yeah, that’s rude but so is just inviting yourself over to my table to complain about your non-break-up break-up.
So, yeah… some moments in there were a bit cringe… Anna’s character does nothing for me and this will just be another case of wishing the main character would end up with a side character but we all know that never happens which means we are stuck with a Kazu x Anna ship for the next 12 episodes.
I’ll see if it gets better but the first episode didn’t hook me in a way where it’s going to be a must-watch whenever it comes out but, I’ll give it a shot and see where it goes because there is potential here.
