WEBTOON is developing two AI products with the goal of reducing drawing time for its creators. WEBTOON filed an IPO with the SEC which states:
“We have leveraged artificial intelligence and our data advantage to launch products aimed at reducing the workload for creators to produce high quality content.” One of their products in the testing phase, Shaper, uses 3D modeling and AI to turn sketches into character models, allowing creators to “change a character’s poses seamlessly and without the need to sketch each pose.”
The AI works by taking a 2D image into a 3D test model with their first product and then a 3D model back to a 2D image using their second product.
The second product is known as Constella and is WEBTOON’s proprietary AI technology. It allows for 3D character models in various poses to be conversed into 2D characters with the creator’s own drawing style.
The SEC filing also states:
“For example, many of our creators have indicated that their greatest pain point is the repetitive sketching involved in serialized content, such as when a character changes a pose or their clothing, and they need to start the sketch from scratch.”
It is unknown how the AI was trained at the time.
In addition, WEBTOON rolled out an AI Painter tool to its creators.
