Nintendo finally had their June 2024 Nintendo Direct presentation, where they announced and revealed a slew of new games for the next fiscal year. But the biggest splash made during the show was from the first official look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Fans have been waiting a long time for any updates on the Prime sequel, and their patience is seemingly starting to pay off.
The final reveal of the show was Metroid Prime 4, which gained the new subtitle Beyond. And not only did we get to see how the game looks since it was first announced, Nintendo went a step further. The quick look gave fans a glimpse at gameplay, which had Samus Aran landing on a planet and exploring some ruins. However, she’s interrupted by a group of what appears to be Space Pirates invading the area. We get a quick look at what may appear to be a new villain that Samus will be clashing with throughout the course of the game.
We also got a few seconds of Samus exploring the planet in her Morph Mall mode, as well as scanning various objects and beings on the ground. Previous games in the series had players scanning multiple things and acquiring new abilities for Samus. The brief look at combat in the teaser had Samus firing missiles at incoming enemies, a staple of the franchise that looked very good in the reveal. As far as new beams or any of Samus’ other powers from throughout the Metroid series, we’ll have to just wait and see.
While Nintendo did show a lot of the game, they didn’t elaborate on any details on what was shown. The teaser did reveal that the game is set for a 2025 release. Although not confirmed, this could mean we’ll be hearing more about Metroid Prime 4: Beyond around the same time Nintendo may be talking about the next Nintendo console. In addition, many have wondered if Nintendo will also rerelease a collection of all the previous Metroid Prime games for the Switch. However, no Nintendo has not yet commented or confirmed such, even after releasing the original Metroid Prime for the console.
Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced back at E3 2017 during Nintendo’s Direct presentation. Back then, fans only had a logo to be excited about, as the game was officially in development. However, Nintendo had some trouble behind the scenes with the game’s development and decided to go quiet about it, asking fans to have patience while the studio restarted much of what they had done up to that point. They also announced that Retro Studios would be brought in to help develop the game.
For now, Nintendo fans will have to wait longer before finding out what happens next for Samus Aran. But they can rest east knowing that things are moving forward with the game, and that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch soon.
