In a move that was inevitable, anime studio Gainax has filed for bankruptcy. The studio best known for Neon Genesis Evangelion has had a very turbulent history dealing with borrowing money, mishandling intellectual properties, and tax evasion.
Gainax went on record to state that their financial situation had worsened since 2012 and it has gotten to the point where they cannot continue doing business. They have filed for bankruptcy and are currently working with studio Khara, who have been helping to alleviate some of Gainax’s debts that it was well aware of, to ensure that intellectual properties end up in the correct hands so that the creators can do with them as they please.
Right now, the motion for bankruptcy was filed with the Tokyo District Court on May 29. No official announcement of dissolving the company or what the true future holds has been announced as of yet; however, it is not looking good for Gainax.
