Easily one of the biggest downfalls of video game adaptation movies and TV shows is that despite them trying to “bring the game world to life,” they rarely, if ever, work with the teams that actually MADE the games and thus would be able to guide them on what to do or NOT to do. When they are made in collaboration with the game dev team, like with Sega or Naughty Dog, it tends to go really well. To that end, Sony knows that to make The Legend of Zelda Movie as best it can be, they needed to rely on the franchise’s creator.
This came from a Deadline interview with the chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Tom Rothman. They were discussing Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which was directed by Wes Ball, who is also directing the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s beloved property. When addressing the new movie, Rothman made it clear that Shigeru Miyamoto is heavily involved in the process:
“The movie is being developed and made in the closest possible collaboration with [Nintendo video game designer] Shigeru Miyamoto,” Rothman explained. “He’s a true genius in that world, and it’s really his strong vision that is motivating it. He created it and understands it thoroughly. You only to look at the results of Super Mario Brothers to see.”
Hearing that Miyamoto is onboard in the “closest” way is a good thing, but it still remains to be seen how The Legend of Zelda Movie will work in live-action. Now that Wes Ball is done with his latest film, this Nintendo property is his next big production, and he’s excited to make it.
