For most players, Titan will be the first summon encountered in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Upon entering the Grasslands region, you’ll soon meet Chadley, who previously handled intel in Remake. And guess what? He has more intel to uncover, and this time, he’s out in the wide world. He’ll tell you about the Titan summon, a gargantuan entity you can get by battling it in Chadley’s combat simulator. Here’s how to get the Titan Summon in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
I have to admit, I initially skipped this summon in my guides since I didn’t know if it would prove too tough. But another writer here at The Outerhaven told me he had some trouble, so thank you to Scott for reminding me that I should really cover the first summon for those starting out. And while the battle against Titan is fairly straightforward, it does have a few key steps that are easy to miss.
Finding the Summon Sanctuaries in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
First, while you can definitely battle Titan right when you meet Chadley, it’s highly advisable to get some intel. By visiting Sanctuaries around the Grasslands and partaking in their little button-recalling minigame, you can weaken Titan in the simulator. And what’s more, this also strengthens your Titan summon once you get the Materia. This mechanic appears for each summon in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, with Titan kicking it off.
You can find the Sanctuaries fairly spread out around the Grasslands. They’re denoted by a little symbol that looks like an archway with a spiky gem inside. In the image below, you’ll see that one Sanctuary is located all the way to the northeast, by the coast. The next one is all the way to the west, past the Midgar pipeline. And the third is in a cave on the way to the Midgardsormr boss battle, so you’ll want a Chocobo to get you through the swamp. You’ll get one through the story regardless.
Once you’ve visited the Sanctuaries, report back to Chadley to battle the Titan summon in the combat simulator. Titan fights with a number of earthquake and rock-throwing moves. And while he can hit hard, he has more weaknesses than any other summon.
Taking on the Titan Summon
Titan is weak to wind, so it can be worth bringing along Aerith to cast wind spells. In order to pressure Titan, you can block, evade, or counter attacks. And who better to do all of those things? None other than Red XIII. That’s right, our crimson pooch has a unique moveset that allows him to easily block and counter, which also charges his Vengeance Meter. He’s also real speedy, and can easily dodge attacks you can’t block, denoted by a red exclamation point.
By blocking, dodging, and countering attacks, you should have Titan pressured in no time. Hit him with wind spells and any attacks that increase stagger. If you’re using Red XIII, he has an incredibly strong move called Stardust Ray. Use it. It costs two ATB bars but it really puts on the pressure. Cloud’s Focused Thrust is also good for this.
Once Titan is staggered, now’s a great time to use Limit Breaks or Synergy Abilities. By this point in the fight, you should have a couple ready or almost ready. And even if you don’t, just hit as hard as you can with wind and other attacks. You may not take Titan out this time, but repeat the above strategy to pressure and then stagger him again.
Earth Quake and Shake
That said, Titan does have two moves to watch out for. Once he uses Earthen Aegis, it will create a barrier around him, protecting him. But unlike standard barrier spells, you can actually select Earthen Aegis in the command menu to attack the barrier directly, shattering it. And this will also pressure Titan as well.
His big move is Earthen Fury, which hits hard but not as hard or as wide as the major attacks of other summons. In fact, if you spread your party out, some members can avoid getting hit. As such, it can be good to have Aerith or Barret on your team, since they typically attack from a distance. Heal if you need to, and then get back to pressuring and staggering. Eventually, you’ll bring Titan to his knees.
And just like that, you’ll have your first major summon in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Sure, you can get others from transferring save data, but Titan will be the first you can actually level up. As such, I really do recommend visiting the Sanctuaries to do so. Now, you’ll have your own Incredible Hulk to help lead you to victory.
