CD Projekt Red’s expansion to Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty, is almost here. And if you haven’t been keeping tabs on the game, I have some possibly bad news for you. Accompanying Phantom Liberty is a massive update for Cyberpunk 2077 called “Update 2.0.” This update is going to completely overhaul the game, such as adding new skill trees, perks, updated vehicle combat, AI improvements, user interface updates, and much more. Due to this, CD Projekt Red is recommending that anyone looking to play Cyberpunk 2077 or its expansion, instead of dusting off their old game, save to start a new playthrough.
I know it sounds like a pain, but thankfully, the developer has your back. Similar to The Witcher 3 DLC, you’ll have the option to skip straight to the Phantom Liberty expansion, so you won’t have to play through the entirety of Cyberpunk 2077. However, given all the updates and changes, perhaps a new playthrough is warranted.
That said, you don’t have to do so; it’s just recommended. Choosing not to do so, once you update the game and fire it up, you’ll notice that your existing character attributes and perks will be reset. So, it’s completely up to you. Speaking of which, have you checked out the new Cyberpunk 2077 Build Planner? If not, perhaps you should.
Honestly, I’m looking forward to both the expansion and the update, as I’m one of the people who have been waiting for Cyberpunk 2077 to be “fixed.” I’ve been following the game ever since it was released, and I wasn’t initially happy with its state, I knew the developer was working to make this one of its best games ever. So, imagine it’s time to jump in and experience the game how it was meant to be played, and I’m looking forward to it.
Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty releases on September 26, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
