One of the biggest mysteries of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the first figure Link meets, Rauru. He is the previous owner of the arm that is placed on the Hero of Time. Rauru has a legendary heritage that is intriguing to any fan of the series.
Here’s exactly who Rauru is in Tears of the Kingdom.
Who exactly is Rauru in Tears of the Kingdom?
Rauru is a mysterious figure that Link meets in the introductory Sky Island. He guides the Hero of Time through the process of finishing the shrines and unlocking the Temple. However, he isn’t just a tutorial character. Instead, he’s the first-ever King of Hyrule or at least shares the same name as him. Rauru is also of the now-extinct Zonai kind. This character’s important as the arm now on Link’s body used to be this ghostly figure’s. He also saved Link from certain death and then guides the handsome hero throughout the journey. Even though his race is ancient, he apparently learned about Link through Princess Zelda.
How is that possible?
Spoilers: Zelda accidentally goes back in time during the opening of Tears of the Kingdom and meets Rauru. She then speaks with him about Link, potentially saving him in the future.
Rauru’s other appearances in The Legend of Zelda series
While not in a Zonai form, Rauru has been a character in other Zelda titles. Rauru acts as a sage in The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In the latter game, Rauru is partially the reason why Link enters Hyrule Castle just before facing Ganondorf. He also helps seal the villain in the Sacred Realm. Rauru is a key character throughout the timeline of the series, and he is still important in the canon with Tears of the Kingdom.
Finally, you can see Rauru within each shrine, giving you the Light of Blessing. He’s the statue standing with a princess on the side.
