It is time for, yet, another isekai but this one has a bit of a twist in the fact that the main character can return to the real world anytime that they want. Of course, I am talking about… *inhales*… Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta (I Gained a Cheat Skill in Another World Then Became Overpowered in the Real World, Too)
*gasps*
Oxy-gen….P…lease…
We all know isekai is an oversaturated genre where it seems as if ideas are scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel these days. Heck, we now have the explosion of people going into a dating sim game because fantasy has just been so overplayed. So, why am I giving this one a shot? Because bringing your powers back to the real world seems interesting but is the show is as interesting as it makes itself out to be?
Let’s Go!
First Episode Synopsis
Yuuya Tenjou is a fat middle schooler who is constantly bullied and beaten up. On the way home, he spots a girl in trouble and despite his better judgment, tries to help her out… only to get bullied and beaten up.
He goes home and is fed up with his life. His parents want nothing to do with him, either. The only person who was kind to him was his grandfather… but he’s dead. His grandfather left him his house and even his parents tried to take it away from him but, apparently, his grandfather saw that coming and made sure that the house belonged to Yuuya and no one else!
After getting beat up at school, he’s late to his paper delivery job and gets fired. At the end of his rope, he goes to the bathroom and looks at himself in the mirror. Disgusted by what he sees, he breaks the mirror and pounds on the wall which leads to a secret door opening up to an even more secret room filled with the most secretest of secret items! In this room is another door that leads to another world.
Once he enters, he’s given every pop-up ad in existence about this skill and at that title and this ownership and whatnot. He tries out some weapons he finds until a lvl 300 blood ogre pays him a visit. One spear throw later and he instantly gains 100 levels, 1000s of attribute points, and enough real-world money to not have to worry about delivering papers again. Plus, he actually gets to leave and go back to the real world where he goes through a body transformation that even Jenny Craig can’t deliver.
He returns to school looking like a supermodel but when he’s confronted by his bullies about being a transfer student, them and even Yuuya can’t believe that he went through such a transformation!
Worth Watching?
MAYBE – I am not going to deny that this show had a very strong first episode but more often than not I’ve seen shows that start off amazing out of the gate and then as soon as Episode 2 hits, it falls into mediocrity. It’s like “Okay! Let’s blow the majority of our budget on cool CG, awesome fight scenes, a kickass premise, an amazing score on the first episode and we’ll wing it from there.”
I am getting that vibe very heavily from this show so I really want to give this 2 or 3 more episodes to really see if they can keep it interesting. Plus, it has video game isekai elements where the main character just gets a whole bunch of OP stuff thrown at him without earning any of it just for the sake of the plot.
I want to be optimistic but… I’m going the cautious route. If you’re an isekai junkie, you’ll probably watch this anyway and nothing I say is going to change your mind so off with you… be merry and happy and enjoy the show. I’ll reserve my judgment for after the BING BING WAHOO vibes wear off.
