At their most recent Forward event, Ubisoft announced multiple new titles as well as the end of Eivor’s chapter in the franchise. They also shed some light on Infinity and it’s not a video game. It really hasn’t been a better time to be an Assassin’s Creed fan.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Announced as a free expansion of sorts, the “Last Chapter” of Eivor’s story is expected to release within the “next few months”. The trailer itself didn’t reveal much but it seems as if Eivor is having some trouble dealing with Odin’s memories as narrated by Basim. At the time of its announcement, it was confirmed that a few loose ends would be tied and some key characters would make their return as Eivor sets out on a new adventure on “distant shores”.
This might be the moment many players were waiting. Players have wondered what brought Eivor to Vinland as it is the location of her final resting place. Eivor herself even mentions returning to Vinland so it would be nice to see what led her back to the Americas, aside from it just being a nice retirement destination.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Coming next year, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage sees players visiting Baghdad as a young Basim on his journey to become the Master Assassin we ended up meeting in Valhalla. While no gameplay was shown, Mirage is looking to revisit the franchise’s original format. Ubisoft touts it as the ultimate assassin experience as the game’s website claims it to be a tribute to the original game. Players can expect to seamlessly parkour through and immersive Bahgdad, relying on stealth with the largest assortment of tools in order to perform “the most visceral assassinations” to ever grace the franchise.
One thing worth noting, is that Assassin’s Creed Mirage is offering a cheaper assassin’s experience as well. In the United States, players looking to pre-order the game can do so at $50 USD. The deluxe edition rings in at $60 USD and if you’re into collectible statues, the Collector’s Edition is $150 USD. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and the Xbox Series in 2023.
Codename Jade
This next entry into the universe of Assassin’s Creed is exclusive to mobile devices and set in Ancient China. This is where the showcase started going farther into the future of the franchise and not much was shown for Jade. The trailer offered us an in-engine tour of the landscape and an assassin just as he performs a leap of faith.
Don’t get too attached to this character though as Ubisoft has stated that players will create their OWN assassin. Codename Jade will be a “AAA Action Adventure game” and experience a unique, standalone story. No release date has been announced however.
Codename Red
Next, is the Assassin’s Creed game everyone has been asking for. Set in Feudal Japan, players will finally be able to experience life as a shinobi assassin. The trailer for this announcement is short and doesn’t do much other than confirm details that were already leaked. There is no release date or window announced.
All that we know is that Red will finally take us to Japan and that it will be an open world, action RPG. Red is being developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Codename Hexe
Hexe is another title announced with barely any information given about what it is. As described by executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté, Hexe will be a “very different” type of Assassin’s Creed game. He also teased that eagle eyed fans might possibly discover some secrets from Hexe’s thirty one second reveal trailer.
Given the nature of the trailer, one could assume that Hexe will be set during some kind of witch trials. You can hear dogs barking in the distance as the camera pans down to the sign of the Assassin’s fashioned from a series of twigs, dangling above a campfire. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye out to see what else is discovered as there is undoubtedly more hidden in the trailer.
Assassin’s Creed on Netflix
Finally, Ubisoft is teaming up with Netflix to bring a couple of things to the streaming giant. First, there’s going to be a live action series. Nothing was shown but Côté described it as, “an epic, genre-bending, live-action adaptation” of the franchise. The show is being produced alongside Jeb Stuart, who recently wrote Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla show.
Ubisoft is also working on an Assassin’s Creed game for the streaming platform as well and once again, nothing was really revealed about it either. Côté stated it was still in early development and we can only assume it’ll tie into Netflix’s show. It is too early to say however.
What is Assassin’s Creed Infinity?
Along with most of the games up above, Assassin’s Creed Infinity is one of those things that was leaked to the public. A lot of rumors went around, stating it was a live action game and Ubisoft didn’t do much to squash those rumors. However, at their showcase, Côté was allowed to reveal some details about what Infinity is and it’s not a game.
Assassin’s Creed Infinity, is instead, a platform that will host past, present and future titles under its umbrella. Don’t let my description fool you however as Infinity is not expected to launch anytime soon. Ubisoft won’t start putting games onto this platform until Codename Red is released and Codename Hexe will also fall under Infinity’s umbrella as well.
If you’re an Assassin’s Creed fan, it goes without saying that you’ll be eating good for a long time to come. As far as I’m concerned, I cannot wait to see what Eivor’s final chapter will bring to Valhalla and I’m looking forward to seeing more of Basim in Mirage when it comes out next year.
Shout out to Ubisoft, IGN and Gamespot for providing links to the trailers!
