Today, Logitech has revealed that it has partnered up with Tencent and will be working on a new cloud gaming handheld device.
This new handheld will utilize Nvidia’s GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming and is expected to be released in 2022. Both tech giants are working directly with Nvidia and Xbox to ensure that whatever this handheld cloud gaming device is called, will work as intended. I also like the idea that they understand that they aren’t stuck with just one cloud gaming service.
Logitech G’s leadership in PC and console gaming gear make them an ideal partner to help us realize the vision of bringing a better gaming experience to gamers around the globe,” said Daniel Wu, general manager of Tencent Games Smart Solution Innovation Lab. “Today marks the start of a new opportunity for our companies to further push the frontiers of gaming devices.
As one of the leading global platforms for game development, publishing and operations, Tencent Games has been at the forefront of innovation and it’s why we partnered with them, said Ujesh Desai, general manager of Logitech G. “As someone that grew up playing video games, the idea of being able to stream and play AAA games almost anywhere is super exciting, and we can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working on.
Xbox Cloud Gaming on Android phones has been astonishing (for the most part), and while some of us have added this service to our Steam Decks and other mobile devices, the impact hasn’t been as significant as many have hoped. The prospect is intriguing, as cloud gaming is still in its infancy, and yet, Xbox has been able to champion one of the better cloud gaming mobile services. With Logitech and Tencent adding one more player to the pool, things are starting to heat up.
Update: The prominent leaker, Evan Blass released images of the device. Here, we can see the UI for the device, where we can see a few familiar icons, including Google Play, Xbox, Nvidia, Xbox, Steam, Chrome, and YouTube. Steam coming to the device isn’t mind-blowing, as Valve is pushing its Steam Deck OS so that it’s available on handheld devices, should the manufacturer want to include it.
As for Nvidia and Xbox, I’m sure these two are just the start. There’s no reason other cloud services won’t be usable either; at least, that’s the hope.
I’m sure that Logitech and Tencent can’t wait to show the world what they’re working on. All we can do for now is signup for updates on this new handheld gaming device.
