The Story
The seventh volume of Spy x Family picks up with Twilight meeting Donovan Desmond. The conversation goes well; however, he doesn’t make much headway in getting closer to the Desmond family… but it’s still preliminary steps for now.
After this, we go on a cute little side adventure where Bond is avoiding death by not eating Yor’s cooking. This leads us to see a bit of a mission that Twilight was called on to take. After that, we get a glimpse into Yuri’s life as a member of the SSS as he tracks down a publisher of a writer who is spreading false stories.
Lastly, we get to our new main story arc. Yor is called on for a job but it’s not to assassinate anyone. Instead, as a favor, she needs to protect a mother and child as they flee to a foreign country. They are traveling by sea so she needs to board the yacht as a backup plan in case things go south. At the same time, Anya wins a raffle to take a cruise… on the same boat that Yor is doing her job on!
Characters
In this volume, we ended up getting some development with Damien Desmond. He finally got the approval of his father (albeit a meager approval) and it inspires him to try and better himself scholastically. In addition, we are starting to see hints that he is taking a liking to Anya which means he is developing into a male tsundere! Our little Damien is growing up so fast! Obviously, this means that we’re going to be seeing Damien become a plot point for Twilight to get even closer to Donovan.
The whole side story with Bond was hilarious. Seeing his own death numerous times thanks to Yor’s cooking and doing everything possible to avoid it was pure hilarity; however, I wonder how many times characters can get away with concealing their lives before something breaks. The fact that Bond went across the entire city just to find Twilight was way too suspicious and I’m not sure how someone like Twilight didn’t question it further.
Outside of that, Yor is thinking about making a pretty big decision but time will tell if she ends up making it. It could be the catalyst that brings us to one of the story’s end goals so we’ll see!
Final Thoughts
Variety is the spice of life and we got a ton of it here. Every character in the series, so far, got some attention in this volume. Even Frankie did… although his little escapade ended up in complete and total failure (poor Frankie). These little side stories served as a nice filler until the next major arc which is underway. Next volume should be dedicating itself to this new arc where we all know something is going to happen. Whether or not Twilight gets involved remains to be seen but I think we’ll just see Yor handle her business and then rejoin her “family” as if nothing ever happened. That’s my guess, anyway.
Oh, and per my last review, I’m still convinced Donovan is on crack.
