The Story
We are one volume away from the conclusion of the series and things, as expected, have heated up. The big reveal in the last volume was that Makima was the Control Devil this entire time. She’s extremely powerful and here, she reveals her one true goal: to control or be consumed by Chainsaw Man. We get a bit of background information on Chainsaw Man himself which I will touch upon in the Characters section but Makima’s plan, if she succeeds and doesn’t die, is a bit noble; however, like more villains with noble aspirations, the way to achieve them is a bit extreme.
The story section here is going to be short because a lot of the volume’s progression has been through its characters but we do end the volume on what I can perceive to be the final battle between Makima and Chainsaw Man and, boy, is it action-packed as one would expect it to be!
Characters
So… Makima, as revealed in the last volume, is incredibly powerful as she can control anything and anyone that she feels is lesser than her. Her ultimate goal, as aforementioned, is to control Chainsaw Man to make the world a better place. For this, we have to look at what Chainsaw Man really is.
The Chainsaw Devil has a special property about it. Whatever the devil eats, its memories from the world, even their names, get erased. Makima figures that if she can control Chainsaw Man, she could erase things such as war, hunger, and other things that have plagued humankind. Well, as I said, that sounds noble but it would involve a lot of killing and, thus, could lead to a diminished world that would leave Makima in control.
All of this stems from Aki’s death, too. Aki’s death left Denji in a bad mental state. He can’t take pride in much of anything anymore. Makima ends up using this to her advantage and agrees when she brings Denji home and he requests to make him one of her dogs. She even breaks Denji’s mind even more after inviting someone over with the intent to bring Denji to a mental state to help her efforts in controlling him.
Despite this, Denji gets free and decides, in Chainsaw Man form, to go to Family Burger, eat some food, and kidnap Kobeni to go out on a date. This shows that even in his current form, he still has some of his old desires and there’s still a bit of him leftover in there. I’m sure that will come into play in the final volume.
Final Thoughts
After Volume 9’s big reveal, this was quite the spectacular follow-up. Although Makima’s scheme is a bit generic for a supervillain, it still fits. Since they showed Denji still having some human qualities of his past life, it’ll definitely come into play next volume to wrap things up.
One of the shocking developments in this volume came so suddenly, though. There was very little build-up to it and I wasn’t quite sure that it actually happened when it did. Although, there were some lines said in this volume that tells me things are not quite done yet with a certain character.
Next volume we’ll see everything conclude, which includes the battle between Denji and Makima. The final pages show how the tide of the battle is turning and I can’t wait to see if Denji truly is Powerless in this fight against Makima!
