In the gaming industry, to stay stagnant usually means one of two things. Either you don’t know how to make something new and are fine with working what you have. Or, you’re working hard to make the next big thing and you just don’t have anything to announce yet. For the Nintendo Switch, it’s not even a full five years old and people are wondering about a successor for the console.
This was actually brought up at the latest Nintendo Financial Briefing and President Shuntaro Furukawa had this to say on the matter:
“On next-gen, we are not saying right now. We are still going through internal discussion on concept, timing, etc., and [are] discussing everything.”
It’s not surprising he’d go this route, after all, the Nintendo Switch has reached 93 million in sales, and again, it’s not even five years old yet. They got time before they need to release a new system. Though, with the Switch going up against more powerful hardware and developers having more frustrations with the Switch. One has to wonder when Nintendo will change its mind on a replacement for the Switch.
For now, just enjoy your Switch; either the original or the newly release OLED model, because there aren’t plans for anything else just yet.
