Masahiro Sakurai is in many ways the face of Super Smash Bros outside of the characters in the game. He’s been its lead since basically the beginning, and its his face we see when a new character is details via his “Mr. Sakurai Presents” videos, and it was he who revealed the game at E3 a few years back. But now that Super Smash Bros Ultimate has finished with the arrival of Sora…what’s next for him? Just as important, will he ever make another Smash Bros game?
In an interview with Famitsu, Sakurai noted that he is “nothing thinking of a sequel,” however, Sakurai also “can’t say with certainty that this would be the end of Smash.”
He went on to note, “I currently don’t see a path where Smash can be produced without myself. Honestly, we did actually try leaving it to someone else, but it didn’t go well.”
He also commented that he would have to talk about it with Nintendo and determine whether “it could succeed”.
Given that Smash Bros Ultimate is the best-selling fighting game EVER, we think a sequel could work. Even though, by Sakurai’s own words in a previous interview, it would not be as large as Ultimate was in terms of roster size and content.
