A common complaint of sorts that the Nintendo Switch has had over its lifetime is that many games in its lineup are just slightly modified versions of games from the previous console, the Wii U. We’ve seen multiple times get basically “drafted” over to the new system to try and “boost” the sales of those games. And while many of them have had success, none of them hold a candle to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
This game was released a little under two months after the Nintendo Switch launched, and quickly became its best-selling title. And now, many are noting that its sales have surpassed Mario Kart Wii to become the best-selling game in the franchise. Here are the official latest numbers:
- Mario Kart Wii lifetime sales – 37.38 million
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe so far – 38.74 million
That’s quite impressive, especially when you consider that those lifetime numbers for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are going to go up even higher as the Switch continues to exist. As for Mario Kart 9…we’re still waiting for any teaser on that front.
