Genshin Impact is a game that became huge in a short amount of time. It beat out Fortnite in annual sales in the first year which is really saying something about how big Fortnite is. With that exposure, the studio of Mihoyo tries to get some collaboration events for their community to push their game further. One such collaboration even recently was with Horizon Zero Dawn when they ported over the main character Aloy as a playable character in the game. Another one they are attempting to do is a collaboration with KFC and are distributing a special KFC glider in-game with the release Genshin Impact 2.3 update. However, the way that they are having users earn this glider is something not so easy or nice.
This will be my tangent on why I dislike the collaboration event with KFC and Genshin Impact. I never thought that was going to be an article idea, but here we are.
Looking at the event details it doesn’t seem all that bad to be honest. The TLDR version is this; you subscribe to 2 new content creators that are a part of the Genshin Impact event going on from November 24th, 2021 to December 8th, 2021. A requirement of this is content creators must be new to you; they must not be someone you’ve already subscribed to before this event. What aggravates me more is that not even Prime subscriptions are not valid with this deal; You have to give your own money, which will equal about $10.
Why do I have a problem with this? One, if you know the follow-for-follow plans many Twitch channels go through, you will realize that they are not very helpful. A new follow, or a new subscription for getting something out of it other than joining the community and enjoying the content creator’s platform will not add any actual value to the twitch channel in the long run. In the two weeks of the event, the streams will probably be pretty full and lively, with people waiting to get their redemption code from the new subscriptions and follows. After the two weeks are up, nobody who just wanted the wings will come back. This doesn’t add significant value to the small streamers aside from depression from having a lively channel to going back to a much less lively channel.
Secondly, let’s look at the content creator’s side and see more reasons why I dislike this. There is an email that was leaked of the terms you have to agree to in order to be eligible to be in the event as a streamer.
- You’re required to only stream Genshin Impact for the two weeks of the event. Any other game streamed, and you will be instantly blacklisted.
- Two, while playing Genshin Impact, you can not criticize the game or the company in any way, shape, or form and must block out all criticism from your chat.
- You are not allowed to have any other sponsored content on your channel for the two weeks of the event and must decline any incoming offers.
- You can only take the payments from the subs themselves, no donations are allowed in the two-week span. This isn’t all bad in my opinion but I do want to make some points of things I do find that is bad.
Being able to play Genshin Impact only for the two-week period? Most streamers who have a consistent following have a scheduled amount of time they play a week. It can be a period of 6 hours a day to 8 hours a week. Most new content in Genshin Impact if you have been up to date on the game will not take that long to complete. Especially since this upcoming update doesn’t have a large story event or new island event like previous updates in Inazuma. They won’t have a lot of new content they will need to accomplish. This will make their schedule extremely dry in Genshin Impact unless they are planning to make a whole new account specifically for this event.
Big-time streamers who stream Genshin Impact regularly use other people’s accounts to do giveaways, spiral abyss runs, or hard boss runs the account owners can’t do themselves well. This is how they add content. If you are a small streamer, you won’t have ample access or trust to use other people’s accounts for these purposes, and you can only grind your own account so far in a single day being limited due to your resin cap. There is no way you can keep your streaming schedule and stream Genshin Impact only unless it requires making a new account for the content, and that puts unnecessary strain on small streamers.
You’re not allowed to criticize Genshin Impact or Mihoyo? Like what? How will Mihoyo even monitor this requirement? Will they have to have a mole in every single streamer’s chat and stream? If any criticism is given they will instantly blacklist the streamer? This was done to streamers like Tectone who have big followings for the game but don’t get reached out to because of their criticism of Genshin Impact. Clearly, they have done it before, and they can do it again to other outlets. This is just an absurd requirement and will make it so small streamers will be scared to speak their mind or be open with their community on this subject.
No other sponsored content? One thing about small streamers you should know is they don’t get a lot of money from their subs. I mean, it makes sense. They don’t have a lot of subs, so they don’t get a lot of money. Add in the requirement of needing $100 at least to claim a payout from Twitch. If they do make any money, it is mainly from sponsored content or donations.
Why do I dislike this? Most will say if you dislike this event, you will be hurting small streamers but that is the exact opposite. I dislike this because it doesn’t help small streamers. It will give them a two-week resurgence that will then kill their channel and motivation. It will not give them a boost in their community. It will not allow them to branch out to other content to try; it will not even let them gain exposure to other companies.
I do not like this event, and I will not be participating in it.
