Head of Digital Eclipse Mike Mika recently spoke to the folks at GamerHubTV over the ongoing pursuit to make Marvel vs Capcom 2 available to players after over a decade since its last release was pulled from online stores. The abridged version is that talks are being had but there is a lot of red tape and corporate back-and-forth between Disney and Capcom that needs to take place before it can get the official green light.
The campaign to make Marvel vs Capcom 2 available to players again has recently seen a massive boom due to the efforts of the Free MVC2 hashtag as well as the efforts of fans and content creators like Maximilian Dood. Disney and Marvel are also reportedly very aware of the push to give MvC2 a rerelease according to Mica:
The reaction was incredible and I know that both Disney and Capcom have seen that loud and clear, and we’ve begun some discussions on that right now and we’re trying to see how far we can go.
Digital Eclipse previously worked on the most recent re-release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before it was eventually delisted. Since then, the studio has also worked on multiple collections of classic Capcom titles such as Mega Man Legacy Collection, Disney Afternoon Collection, and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection.
The wheels are definitely turning and it’s all going to come down to whether or not Disney and Marvel decide they want to play ball. The fans have been wanting it and the fervor to see Marvel vs Capcom 2 return from the Disney vault has reached critical mass. Hopefully, these ongoing talks between the powers that be can lead to some good news for fans and MvC2 will finally be able to take players for a ride once again.
