Let’s be honest, every time we turn our heads there’s a game another “Metroidvania” game that’s being released onto the PC. The platform is so full of them that it’s hard to see the gems from the rest of the crowd. With that, let me help make it easier by showing you the top 5 Metroidvania games available on PC. This ranges from older titles to a fairly new game that I think you’re going to enjoy.
Of course, this is just my personal list. What I feel are the best Metroidvania games on PC could be quite different than your favorites. If you feel indifferent, I’d love to know what games should have made the list in the comments below!
Ori: The Collection
Developer: Moon Studios
Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
ORI: The Collection is a collection (duh) of two of the best action/RPG/Metroidvania games I’ve ever played; Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Both games are epic adventures, full of action, amazing storytelling, and some of the best music I’ve heard in a video game. It’s relaxing and yet tough as nails at times. If you’re a fan of these genres, then you shouldn’t even question picking up this collection — just get it. Seriously though, the music in this game, so damned good.

Axiom Verge
Developer: Thomas Happ Games
Publisher: Thomas Happ Games
Check out our Axiom Verge review.
To think that Axiom Verge was willed into existence because Nintendo wouldn’t release another Metroid game is much more than that. You play as a scientist who seemingly dies, but awakens up in an ancient and high-tech world. The game even looks like the original Metroid game, with better gameplay, lots of weapons to choose from, a massive world to explore, and there’s even a decent story to follow. Oh, and this game was designed and developed by one person, Tom Happ. The same person who has worked on a number of AAA games, and was responsible for bringing several indie titles to Nintendo’s platforms over the past few years.
Play Axiom Verge now, while we’re waiting on Tom Happ to finish up the sequel, Axiom Verge 2.

Iconoclasts
Developer: Konjak
Publisher: Bifrost Entertainment
While it seemed like Iconoclasts would be in development forever, it was certainly worth the wait. Iconoclasts is an indie 2D open-world platformer title, with RPG elements sprinkled it. While it looks like a cutesy game, that couldn’t be further from the truth that under all the charm is a frantic platformer, full of puzzles, a huge world, and bosses that could cause you to toss your controller (or keyboard) across the room. And hey, if you’re a Mega Man fan, Iconoclasts might be up your alley.

Hollow Knight
Developer: Team Cherry
Publisher: Team Cherry
Team Cherry set the world on fire when it released Hollow Knight. An enjoyable, fun, and at times complex platform RPG, Hollow Knight will push you to the limits with an insane amount of action, challenging boss fights, and charm. This is one of the best-looking indie games I’ve ever seen, all thanks to the hand-drawn style. If that wasn’t enough, four different DLC expansions are available for the game; Godmaster, Lifeblood, The Grimm Troupe, and Hidden Dreams. Oh right, there’s another one that’s currently in development called Silksong. You may have heard it out, and it’s kind of a big deal, but so far, Team Cherry has been pretty hush on when we can expect to see it.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
Developer (s): Adglobe, Live Wire
Publisher: Binary Haze Interactive
This game is on the creepy end of Metroidvania games but is still a fantastic play nonetheless. You play as a little girl named Lily, who wakes up in a chamber, completely alone. While everyone has been cursed and is now undead beings, much to the horror of Lily. And while it seems hopeless, Lily isn’t defenseless as a protector spirit comes to her aid and accompanies her on a quest. Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights takes a large number of cues from other Metroidvania games and along with some darker themes than you may be used to, but the end result is a lengthy and engrossing game that you may not want to put down.
