Sunset Overdrive was an insane open-world action shooter developed by Insomniac Games for the Xbox One and launched way back in 2014. It was well-received by critics (currently sitting at an 81 on Metacritic) but didn’t have the impact that many had hoped. In the years since it has become a bit of a cult classic with fans periodically praying to the Microsoft altars for a sequel or some kind of update. Now those prayers have maybe been answered. Well…sort of.
Twitter user @Nibellion, a frequent source of scoops within the games industry, brought to light a trademark filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment that was seemingly registered this past April. As of right now, there is no word of whether this means a follow-up of some sort is in development. It does mean that the rumor mill is once again awash with fans wanting a sequel. Time will tell if this does actually pan out.
A trademark does not automatically equate to new content being on the way. SIE, and other corporations like them, file and renew trademarks regularly to essentially protect their brands. So sadly for Sunset Overdrive fans, this is still a ways off from being a green light for a follow-up. Fingers crossed it does happen though.

It is also important to point out that while Sunset Overdrive may have been an Xbox One exclusive, Insomniac has since been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. So if there does happen to be a sequel of some kind, it could likely be a PlayStation exclusive. Which would definitely be a blow to Xbox owners and fans of the original who stuck with that line of consoles.
That being said, exclusivity has become a bit muddied in recent years. For instance, Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax Media is set up in such a way where it leaves room for the respective titles under that umbrella to appear on PlayStation and elsewhere on a case-by-case basis. The fact of the manner is that if Sunset Overdrive does see a revival, there’s really no telling where it’ll end up or even for how long.
