At one point in time, Donkey Kong was one of the most important franchises at Nintendo. But over time, the franchise kind of took a step back until Retro Studios came in and brought back the infinitely popular Donkey Kong Country titles for two games on the Wii and the Wii U. But despite their praise and success, a new title has not come to Nintendo Switch (Tropical Freeze was ported from the Wii U and sold over a million Switch for the record). However, a new rumor is stating that one is on the way, and from a different team.
Specifically, this comes from Zippo, a respected Nintendo insider who has predicted many things about Nintendo right in the past. And he made a very curious blog post about the Donkey Kong franchise, stating:
“It’s the big ape’s 40th anniversary, and while I’m not sure how Nintendo is celebrating the occasion, there is a new 2D DK game being developed by EPD Tokyo. Retro is obviously busy with other things, so Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to bring DK back in as internal series. Don’t expect the ‘Country’ moniker to return, as EPD Tokyo are not interested in making a sequel to games they didn’t make. Diddy, Cranky and the Kremling Krew should all be returning in this installment. It sounds like this game is launching before the end of the year. An E3 announcement seems very likely,” Zippo wrote in the blog post.
Obviously, this is not a confirmed thing, but the information would fit with certain things, and Nintendo hasn’t announced any major 1st party games coming out beyond July, so this might just work out with the timing involved. Many fans are eager for a return of Donkey Kong, the only question is…what will the game be like when it comes out?
