Someone pinch me; I have to be dreaming. Out of nowhere, Sega has announced that it will be hosting a live stream next week, and it’s devoted to Virtua Fighter? You know, the once-popular fighting title that Sega used to pump out on a semi-yearly basis.
The live stream will take place on Thursday, May 27 at 8 PM JST / 7:30 PM PDT / 10:30 PM EDT, over on the newly created “Official Virtua Fighter” YouTube channel.
This event is part of Sega’s Virtua Fighter x esports, a possible attempt to bring back the one king of 3D fighting games. Teased during the last Toyko Game Show, Segs has something planned. Mind you, when we first heard the news, Sega didn’t state what their plans were. We all assumed it would be a game of sorts but easily could have been something else. And while this live stream could be more of the game, I’m really hoping this is Sega finally getting off its butt and announcing that they’re working on a Virtua Fighter 6 or another related game in the series.
Currently, my mind is exploding as to what we can expect next week. Virtua Fighter was one of my first 3D fighters and was my favorite at the time. I used to main a mean Sarah Bryant in my day. But those days are long gone, and Sega hasn’t released a new Virtua Fighter game ever since Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown – 14 years ago! Can you imagine a new Virtua Fighter being developed in the Unreal Engine or looking like something similar to a Tekken 7? I want to see this!
I really hope Sega does announce a new Virtua Fighter game. Needless to say, I’ll be watching this live stream and praying that we get the news we’re all looking forward to.
