New Pokemon Snap Direct Talks Selecting Pokemon For The Title

By Todd BlackApril 15, 2021
New Pokemon Snap

To some, the idea of New Pokemon Snap (or its original) may not make sense in certain ways as it’s just a game about taking pictures of Pokemon. But the game is more than that, it’s about the experience of seeing Pokemon in a “natural world” versus just when you “run through the grass”. The original title was a major hit with fans because they loved seeing Pokemon all around them in natural ways and its sequel is going to expound on that in various ways. Not the least of which is having over 200 Pokemon in the game to snap with your camera.

But, given that Pokemon is nearing 1000 in number, why did they only pick 200+? Just as important, why did they select these particular Pokemon? The director of New Pokemon Snap, Haruki Suzaki, talked with Game Informer about just that:

“The selection of Pokémon was truly hard,” he said as part of a recent preview of the upcoming video game. “My vision was to create a world where you can actually imagine wild Pokémon thriving in their natural habitats and ecosystem. At first, we thought about Pokémon’s natural habitats and fascinating landscapes and climates to research. Then, we narrowed down our choices by balancing out how different Pokémon would live in these habitats and their relationships within each environment. As a result, there are more than 200 Pokémon, rich in variety, appearing in this game.”

That honestly makes sense as there are certain Pokemon who wouldn’t live in “basic areas and environments” if you will, including many legendary Pokemon and one that require specific evolution requirements. So while you won’t be able to take pictures of all the Pokemon ever, it looks like you’ll be having a fun time when New Pokemon Snap arrives on the Nintendo Switch on April 30th.
